How much ash will your reptile leave?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[1]. For a leopard gecko that's a couple of grams; for a big tortoise it's a few pounds. Enter the weight to see your range.

Ashes weight estimator
Cremated remains are mostly bone, so they typically weigh about 3–5% of body weight.
Expected ashes
2.4 oz–4 oz
That's about the weight of a deck of playing cards.
Small animals, birds, reptiles and fish have light, delicate skeletons, so the amount returned can fall at or below the low end of this range.

Why ask
Why the amount of ash matters more for reptiles
With a dog or cat, nobody worries whether there will be enough ash to fill an urn. With a crested gecko or a young corn snake, it's a fair question. Knowing the likely amount helps you decide three things: whether private cremation is worth it to you, what container to buy, and whether several people can share.
Some keepers are relieved to know a small amount will come back; others decide communal cremation or burial feels more fitting. Either reaction is fine. Our private vs communal guide for reptiles looks at that choice in more depth.
The method
How the estimate is worked out
Cremation heats the body to 1,200 °F+[2]. Soft tissue and water are gone; what's left is mostly bone mineral, which is then processed into the fine, pale grit people call ashes. Because bone makes up a fairly steady share of an animal's body, the remains track body weight closely.
The estimator multiplies your reptile's weight by 3% and 5% to give a low and high figure, the range pet insurer Embrace cites for cremated remains. It then turns the result into something you can picture, like a teaspoon of sugar, a deck of playing cards or a bag of sugar. For comparison, by our estimate a 30 kg dog leaves about 0.9-1.5 kg[3].
Examples
Worked examples from gecko to tortoise
| Reptile and weight | Estimated ashes | The estimator compares it to |
|---|---|---|
| Leopard gecko, 60 g | 1.8 to 3 g | A teaspoon of sugar |
| Bearded dragon, 450 g | 14 to 23 g | An AA battery |
| Ball python, 1.8 kg (4 lb) | 54 to 90 g | A deck of playing cards |
| Red-footed tortoise, 5 kg (11 lb) | 150 to 250 g | A smartphone |
| Sulcata tortoise, 45 kg (100 lb) | 1.35 to 2.25 kg | A 5 lb bag of flour |

Take the leopard gecko. Two or three grams is enough for a pendant, a small vial or a locket, but a standard urn would look empty. That's worth knowing before you pay extra for a large container. The urn size calculator turns the same weight into a container size.

Your result
What your estimate means in practice
Treat the range as a guide to the container you need and how many people can share, not as a promise of exact grams. For anything under a few grams, the more important question is how the provider keeps such a small amount separate and gathers it afterwards. Ask whether they use a dedicated tray or dish for very small pets.
If the amount matters because several people want some, the ashes sharing planner shows how far it will go. Private cremation ashes commonly come back in 5-10 days[4], so there's time to choose a keepsake while you wait.
Honest limits
What the estimator can't tell you
- Exact grams. Body condition, age and bone density all shift the result. An old, thin reptile may return less than the estimate.
- Whether any ash is returned at all with communal cremation. It isn't; communal means no ashes come back.
- Water cremation. Aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) tends to leave slightly more remains than flame cremation, so allow for a little extra.
- How the provider processes remains. Some return finer ash than others, which changes volume more than weight.
If you want to understand each step between collection and return, our article on what happens during reptile cremation goes through it. The services page explains how providers handle very small pets. For a typical adult weight by species, a reptile vet or the Merck Veterinary Manual's reptile chapters are a better guide than a pet-shop label, and the Merck lifespan table shows whether yours was an older animal likely to sit at the low end.
What next
Next steps after estimating
If a small amount of ash still feels right, choose private cremation and ask the provider about small-pet handling. If you'd rather keep something more substantial, consider a shed-skin frame alongside the ashes. And if you'd like us to find a provider that handles tiny reptiles well, send us the details and we'll email back options. Questions people ask
Will I get anything back from a very small lizard?
Usually yes, with private cremation, but only a small amount. A leopard gecko may return two or three grams, and an anole well under one gram. What matters most is that the provider contains very small pets separately so none is lost. Ask how they do it before booking.
Why are reptile ashes sometimes gritty or uneven?
What comes back is processed bone. Providers grind it to different fineness, and a tortoise shell can leave coarser fragments if processing is brief. If you'd prefer finer ash, for example for jewelry, ask whether the provider can process it further.
Do snakes leave more ash than lizards of the same weight?
Not noticeably. A snake has many vertebrae and ribs, but the share of its body that is bone is broadly similar to a lizard's. Weight is the main driver for both. Tortoises and turtles are the group most likely to come out higher, because of the shell.
Can the ashes be weighed when they come back?
Yes. Many providers note the weight, and you can weigh them at home on a kitchen scale in their bag. If the amount seems very different from the estimate, it's reasonable to ask the provider to explain their process.
Should I weigh my reptile's body before cremation?
Only if you want to and can do it hygienically. Leave the body double-bagged and weigh the bag on a kitchen scale, subtracting a similar empty bag. Wear gloves and wipe the scale afterwards. A recent weight from your care log is just as good and spares you the step.
