Free tools for planning a reptile's aftercare
Cremated remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[1], which for a gecko means a pinch and for a tortoise several pounds. These tools do that kind of maths for the reptile you actually have.
- Works in pounds or kilograms, gecko to tortoise
- Every price shown as a sourced range
- Private: nothing you enter is sent anywhere

Why reptile keepers need different numbers
Most pet aftercare calculators assume a cat or a dog. Feed them a 70 g gecko and they either round it up to a small dog or give a meaningless answer. Ours accept decimal weights (enter 0.07 kg for a 70 g gecko), so the answers stay useful for small lizards and hatchling snakes, and they still work for a 100 lb tortoise.
Each tool runs in your browser and shows results as you type. Nothing you enter is stored or sent. Prices appear as ranges with their source underneath, because local quotes vary. When you're ready for real figures, send us your details and we'll ask local providers.

Price
Cremation cost calculator: what to budget before you call
Enter your reptile's weight, the type of cremation and your country to see a realistic price range and the extras that often get added. For most reptiles the answer sits in the lowest US weight band, communal $45-75; private $100-175[2], while giant tortoises and pythons jump to large-dog prices. The full cost calculator page explains exactly how it works.

Ash
Ashes weight estimator: how much will come back
This is the question reptile keepers ask most, and the answer surprises many. Type in the body weight and you'll see a range for the ashes, plus an everyday comparison such as a sugar cube or a cup of rice. It's especially useful before paying for private cremation of a very small lizard. More detail is on the ashes weight estimator page.

Urn
Urn size calculator: from a vial to a full-size urn
Urns are sold by volume, usually in cubic inches. The calculator uses the rule of about one cubic inch per pound of body weight, adds a safety margin and suggests a standard size. For most reptiles that means a keepsake urn or smaller; for a big sulcata, a proper urn. See the urn size calculator page for worked examples.

Choices
Aftercare options compared: cremation, burial or water cremation
Move a few sliders (cost, keeping ashes, environmental impact, speed, ceremony) and the tool ranks private, communal and water cremation against home burial and a pet cemetery. It's a quick way to see which choice lines up with what you care about. If water cremation is new to you, the Cremation Association of North America's alkaline hydrolysis page explains how it works.
40.4% cremation; 34.9% home burial; 1.9% aquamation[3]

Life stage
Pet age calculator: where your reptile is in its life
Reptile lifespans range from a few years to more than a century. Chameleons typically live only 3-8 years[4] in captivity, while one tortoise in Tonga, Tu'i Malila, reached at least 188 years[5]. The calculator shows your pet's life stage and typical life expectancy with its source, which helps you decide when to start planning. Details are on the pet age calculator page. Its lifespans come from the Merck Veterinary Manual's captive lifespan table.

Total cost
Memorial budget planner: the whole bill in one place
Cremation is only part of the cost. The budget planner lists the usual items (euthanasia, cremation, collection, urn, jewelry, a memorial stone, a small farewell) with editable low and high amounts, and keeps a running total. Use the print keepsake line for a framed shed or scute. Replace the defaults with real quotes as they arrive. Open the memorial budget planner for a printable version.

Putting it together
A worked example: planning for a 450 g bearded dragon
Say your bearded dragon weighs 450 g, about a pound. The cost calculator puts private cremation in the lowest US band, so you'd budget roughly $100 to $175 before extras. The ashes estimator suggests about 13 to 23 g back, roughly a heaped tablespoon. If your dragon has only just died, start with what to do when a bearded dragon dies.
The urn calculator then tells you a standard urn would be mostly empty; a 3 to 5 cubic inch keepsake urn fits comfortably. If two children each want a pendant, the sharing planner shows that uses only a pinch each, leaving almost all of it for the keepsake urn. Add collection and the urn to the budget planner and you have a realistic total to compare against real quotes. One thing the numbers won't show: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same crematory,[6] so a smaller container isn't automatically the cheaper one.

Questions people ask
Do the tools work for very small reptiles?
Yes. Enter weight as a decimal in kilograms or pounds (a 50 g anole is 0.05 kg), which keeps the results useful for geckos, anoles and young snakes. For the smallest animals, the ash estimate will be a few grams and the cost will usually reflect a provider's minimum fee rather than the weight.
Are the prices in the calculators quotes?
No. They're typical ranges from named published sources, shown so you know roughly what to expect. Your local price may be higher or lower, and extras like collection or a custom urn can change the total. Ask any provider for a written quote.
Is anything I type saved or sent?
No. The tools run entirely in your browser and don't send your inputs anywhere. If you want us to find real prices, use the separate request form, which only sends what you choose to type into it.
Which tool should I use first?
If you're deciding what to do now, start with the aftercare options comparison, then the cost calculator. If you've already chosen private cremation, the ashes weight estimator and urn size calculator help you pick a container. The age calculator is for planning ahead.
Why does my tiny lizard cost almost as much as a small dog to cremate?
Because most providers price by weight band and charge a minimum fee that covers collection, handling, paperwork and a return container. Those costs barely change with size, so the lightest pets pay the most per pound. Ask whether a provider has a separate small-pet or pocket-pet price.
