Planning aftercare for a snake, lizard or tortoise
Reptile lifespans range from a few years for chameleons to decades for box turtles[1]. Whatever you keep, a written plan saves you guessing when the time comes.
- Records length as well as weight
- Settles shell and shed wishes before anything irreversible
- Private until you copy, save or send it

What should I record before contacting the team?
Reptile Cremation Services uses this worksheet to prepare worldwide inquiries. Your entries stay in this page’s memory until you copy, download or open an email draft. Reloading clears the fields. Record the requested outcome and location, leaving unresolved choices as questions and sensitive medical or personal details out of a shared copy.
0 of 6 fields have an entry. This is a completion count, not a safety score or booking approval.
How do I compare two itemized quotes?
Reptile Cremation Services compares your entered amounts for worldwide inquiries; it does not supply market prices. Use two written quotes in one currency, counting each charge once. Leave unknown amounts blank and use zero only for confirmed inclusions or no charge. Put taxes and other separate charges in the final row.
The tool adds your entries. It does not estimate prices, recommend a provider or establish that two service definitions are equivalent.

How can I keep and share my planning record?
Reptile Cremation Services lets you keep this worldwide planning record with your answers, selected source and entered quote amounts. Copying or downloading creates a copy you control. Opening an email draft lets you review the text in your email app before sending; none of these actions automatically submits an inquiry.
Clear entries removes all worksheet fields, including quote amounts and currency. It does not delete a copy you already saved or an email draft.

Why plan ahead
Why reptile keepers need a plan more than most
Reptiles decline quietly. A snake that stops eating or a lizard that spends more time hiding can be seriously ill before anything looks wrong. And when one dies, keepers face choices dog owners never meet: whether to keep a shell, how to transport a six-foot snake, whether a provider accepts venomous species at all. Answering those calmly, in advance, makes the day itself far simpler.
Lifespans vary so much that planning looks different by species. Old World chameleons live only about 3-8 years[2] in captivity, while bearded dragons commonly live 5 to 10 and leopard geckos 20 or more[1]. A University of Kent study found just 3.6%[3] of pet reptiles died within a year of being acquired, so most keepers have years together, and time to plan.

The six fields
Filling in the reptile worksheet, field by field
Choose your country and enter your city or region; no street address is needed. Then:
- Exact species. "Ball python" or "Hermann's tortoise", not just "snake" or "tortoise". If venomous, say so here.
- Length and approximate weight. Length matters for long-bodied animals because it sets the container size.
- Current location and container. At home in the vivarium, in a sealed box, or at the vet.
- Vet instructions. Any advice on handling, infection risk or necropsy.
- Sheds, photos or impressions. A shed skin you've kept, photos of markings, or a footprint impression.
- Ash return or other remembrance. Whether you want ashes, or would prefer burial, a preserved shell or a keepsake.

Comparing quotes
How to compare two reptile aftercare quotes
The quote table covers anatomy and size, handling and transport, service method, memorial preparation, and taxes or other charges. Use one currency for both quotes, enter each charge once, and leave blanks where a price wasn't stated. The cremation cost calculator gives a baseline to check both quotes against.
For reptiles, the method row needs the closest reading. Private cremation of a small gecko may return a trace, while a large tortoise returns a noticeable amount; ashes generally weigh about 3-5% of body weight[5]. Write down what each provider says they'll return, next to the price. If one quote includes shell preparation and the other doesn't, they aren't the same service. The aftercare options comparison lays out cremation, burial and other paths side by side. Check the small extras as well. By our estimate, print keepsakes added by US crematories have a median price of about $32, ranging from $10 to $76,[6] and a clay impression of a tortoise's foot is usually priced the same way.

Reptile-specific advice
Reptile details keepers are glad they wrote down
- How to confirm death. Note your vet's advice on checking a cold or brumating animal, so no one acts too soon.
- Hygiene. Gloves, a sealed container and hand-washing, because reptiles can carry Salmonella.
- Burial or cremation. If burial suits you better, how to bury a snake or lizard covers depth and location.
- Scattering. If you plan to scatter ashes somewhere meaningful, read our scattering guide first.
- The enclosure. Whether it will be cleaned and reused, sold or given to a rescue.

Questions people ask
What does a reptile aftercare plan need that other pets' plans don't?
The exact species, whether it was venomous, length as well as weight, and any wish to keep the shell or a shed skin. Those details affect whether a provider can accept the animal, how it's transported and whether the chosen method can deliver what you want.
Can I plan to keep a tortoise shell and cremate the rest?
It may be possible through a specialist who prepares the shell separately, but it has to be arranged before any cremation, and not every provider offers it. Record your wish in the plan and ask about it directly when you request quotes.
Does the worksheet store my reptile's details?
No. Everything stays in the open page and clears on reload or when you press Clear entries. Copy, download or email the plan to keep it. A copy you've saved isn't affected by clearing the page.
How should I store a reptile's body while arrangements are made?
Wear gloves, place the body in a sealed bag inside a box, and keep it cool, ideally refrigerated rather than frozen if your vet may want a necropsy. Label the box clearly and wash your hands and any surfaces afterwards.
Is it worth comparing quotes for a small lizard?
Yes, mainly to understand what you'd get back. Two quotes may describe different outcomes: one returning a trace of ash, another communal cremation with nothing returned. Knowing which is which matters more than the price difference.
