Location matters
Why reptile aftercare changes so much from place to place
Every region has pet crematories, but not every crematory is comfortable with reptiles. The ones that are tend to sit near reptile vets, zoos or big keeper communities, which means a city keeper may have three choices while someone two hours out has one. For a leopard gecko, almost anyone will do. For a 90 lb sulcata or a 13-foot boa, the list gets short fast.

In the US: patchy rules and very different prices by state
Pet cremation is lightly regulated in most of the country. One directory counts only 9 states[2] with pet-crematory-specific licensing or consumer laws, and says that as of April 2026 just 2 states[3] (Illinois and Arizona) required written documentation for the customer. Everywhere else, asking for paperwork is up to you.
Human cremation rates are a rough guide to how established cremation is locally. They range from 84.1%[4] projected for Nevada in 2024 down to 34.3%[5] in Mississippi. Places where cremation is the norm tend to have more crematories within reach, though that doesn't mean any of them will take a reptile. By our calculation, that's a spread of 49.8 percentage points between the highest and lowest states,[6] and the Cremation Association of North America's statistics show how fast the lower states are catching up.
Reptile keeping also clusters. Florida's warm climate and exotic pet trade make it a hub, and the state runs an Exotic Pet Amnesty Program for prohibited species. Texas, with 58.2%[7] of households owning a pet, has keepers spread across huge distances, so collection fees and drive time matter more there. United Kingdom
In the UK: new price rules, and tortoises in every town
The UK has about 600,000[8] pet snakes, and tortoises are a fixture of British gardens. Cremation prices run from about GBP 50 to GBP 300+[9], and reptiles usually fall into the smallest price bands.
The UK market is changing. After a major review, the Competition and Markets Authority now requires first-opinion vet practices to offer a communal cremation option and to set out prices for communal, individual and add-on services. That makes it easier to compare what your vet quotes with an independent crematory.
Burying a pet in your own garden is generally allowed in the UK if you own the land, the pet wasn't hazardous to human health, and the grave is well away from water sources. Renters need the landlord's agreement. The Environment Agency's guidance on animal burials sets out the distances to keep from wells, springs and watercourses in England.
Canada and Australia
In Canada and Australia: small-pet bands and long distances
About 3%[10] of Australian households keep reptiles, and native species are tightly licensed, so keepers often already know their state wildlife authority. Individual cremation for pets up to 5 kg, a band that covers nearly all pet lizards and snakes, is listed around AUD 412 median[11] across Australian providers. Communal cremation starts from AUD 80[12] at the low end.
In Canada, prices vary by province. One Vancouver Island crematory lists private cremation at CAD 195-315[13] depending on weight, while an Ontario provider charges more for pets under 25 lb. In both countries, rural keepers may be several hours from the nearest provider, so ask about mail-in or courier options for small reptiles.
Doing it yourself
Home burial rules, and why they matter more for reptiles
Because most pet reptiles are small, home burial is a real option for many keepers. Rules differ: some US cities ban it outright, many counties set depth and distance limits, and Germany's rule, for example, is min 50 cm soil[14] cover over the body. A tortoise buried shallowly in a warm climate can attract scavengers, so dig deeper than feels necessary.

Out of town
When the nearest reptile-friendly crematory is hours away
- Use a cooler. A sealed, double-bagged reptile in a cooler with ice packs travels safely for several hours. Keep it in the car, not the trunk, on hot days.
- Ask about drop-off hours. Many crematories take small pets by appointment, which can save a collection fee.
- Ask your vet. Clinics that treat reptiles often send animals to a particular provider on a regular run, which may cost less than a special trip.
- Freeze if you need to wait. A frozen reptile can wait days or weeks for a scheduled drop-off, as long as you don't want a post-mortem.

Questions people ask
How do I find a crematory that accepts reptiles near me?
Start with your reptile vet, who likely already sends animals somewhere. Then call nearby pet crematories and ask directly whether they take your species and size. Or send us your location and your reptile's details, and we'll email back the options we find.
Is it legal to bury a reptile in my backyard?
Often, but it depends on where you live. Many US counties allow it with depth and distance limits, some cities ban it, and the UK generally allows it on land you own. Avoid water sources, check with your local council or county, and get a landlord's permission if you rent.
Does reptile cremation cost more in big cities?
Usually a little, as with most services. But in rural areas you may pay more in collection or travel because providers are further apart. Comparing total quotes, including collection, gives a fairer picture than comparing the base cremation price alone.
Can I mail a small reptile to a crematory?
Some providers accept small pets by courier, packed frozen in insulated boxes, but rules differ by carrier and country. Never post a reptile without the provider's instructions first. For most keepers, driving to a drop-off point or using a vet's regular service is simpler.
What if my reptile died while I was travelling?
Ask the local vet or pet sitter to refrigerate the body in a sealed bag. If you want your own reptile's ashes, arrange private cremation where it died and have the ashes posted home, which is usually easier than transporting the body.
