How to use the calculator for a reptile
- Check the animal. Reptile is preselected at 5 lb; for reptiles, weight matters far more than type.
- Enter the weight in pounds or kilograms. For a small lizard, use a decimal: 0.1 kg is 100 g.
- Choose the cremation type. Private returns only your reptile's ashes; communal returns none; partitioned sits between; witnessed lets you be present.
- Choose your country so the range uses local published prices. Somewhere else shows US prices in dollars as a guide.
- Tick any extras you expect: home or vet pickup, after-hours or weekend service, a paw print keepsake, an upgraded urn or at-home euthanasia.
The range updates as you change anything, so try a couple of combinations. Switching private to communal is the single biggest change you'll see. If you haven't decided which suits you, the aftercare options comparison helps you weigh them up first.

Where the numbers come from
For the US, the calculator uses CareCredit's published weight bands. Nearly every pet reptile lands in the lightest band. Heavier animals move up: pets over 90 lb, such as an adult sulcata or a large Burmese python, fall in the top band at communal $150-200; private $350-450[2]. For the UK it draws on the Competition and Markets Authority's review, which found prices from about GBP 50 to GBP 300+[3]; for Australia, published median listed prices such as AUD 412 median[4] for pets up to 5 kg.
Extras use typical add-on ranges rather than any single provider's price list: home pickup about $50 to $150, after-hours collection $75 to $200, a paw print keepsake $25 to $75 and an upgraded urn $50 to $300. They're labelled as typical ranges in the tool, because they vary more than the cremation itself.
$9.2 -> $4.2 -> $4.0 per lb[5]
Examples
Worked examples: a ball python and a sulcata tortoise
A 4 lb ball python, private, US, collected from home. The python sits in the up-to-30 lb band, so private cremation is about $100 to $175. Add home pickup at $50 to $150 and the calculator shows $150 to $330, rounding the top up to the nearest $10. Drop the pickup and drive it to the provider yourself, and you're back to the base range.
A 100 lb sulcata tortoise, private, US, collected from home. This lands in the over-90 lb band at about $350 to $450, plus pickup. Because moving a tortoise that size takes two people and a vehicle, many providers quote collection separately or add a handling charge. Expect something like $400 to $600 all in, and ask for the exact figure.

Communal cremation for either animal would be far cheaper; the Competition and Markets Authority's cremation pricing analysis found communal is 2x to 5x cheaper[6] than individual for the same weight. For a very small lizard where little ash would come back, that difference is worth thinking about. Our article on private vs communal cremation for reptiles covers the trade-off.
For a small lizard or gecko, would you still choose private cremation knowing only a pinch of ash may come back?

Your result
What your range means, and why quotes may differ
The low end of your range is what a no-frills provider in a lower-cost area might charge; the high end is closer to a city provider or one with more services included. If your real quote falls well above the top, ask what's included. It may bundle an urn, a certificate or collection that the calculator treats as extras.
communal $30-200; private $100-500+[7]
For a detailed walk through what a written quote should contain, see our reptile cremation cost guide. To add the urn, keepsakes and vet costs to the total, carry your range over to the memorial budget planner. UK readers have an extra tool here: since the CMA's final report on vet services, practices must show communal, individual and add-on prices, so you can compare the line items directly.
Honest limits
What the calculator can't tell you
- Whether a provider will take your reptile. Some crematories won't accept very large snakes, venomous species or animals over a certain size. The calculator assumes someone will.
- Special handling fees. Oversized containers, two-person lifts and venomous-species protocols may add costs no public price list shows.
- Shell retention. Having a tortoise shell cleaned and kept is specialist work priced separately.
- Exact local prices. Published averages are a guide. Your nearest provider may be well above or below them.
Those gaps are why we suggest getting a written quote. Our local pages show how prices shift by area, and the services page explains what each option includes for snakes, lizards and tortoises.
What next
Next steps once you have a rough figure
If you're choosing private cremation, check how much ash to expect with the ashes weight estimator before buying an urn; for many reptiles a keepsake is enough. Then ask two providers for written totals, including collection and container.
If that sounds like too much right now, send us your reptile's details. We'll find providers that take your species and size and email you what they charge.

Questions people ask
Why does cremating a tiny gecko cost almost as much as a cat?
Most providers charge a minimum fee that covers collection or intake, handling, paperwork and a return container. Those costs are the same whether the animal weighs 60 g or 6 kg. The calculator reflects this by placing small reptiles in the lowest weight band rather than scaling price down with weight.
Is the calculator accurate for large snakes?
It gives a fair range by weight, but large constrictors can bring extra costs for handling and oversized containers, and not every provider can take them. Use the result as a starting point and give any provider the snake's length and weight when asking for a quote.
Does pet insurance cover reptile cremation?
Usually not. Standard pet insurance policies rarely cover cremation, and many insurers don't cover reptiles at all. Some policies offer end-of-life add-ons with a fixed allowance. Check your policy wording before assuming anything is covered.
Why is there a witnessed option?
Some keepers want to be present as cremation begins, especially after years with a long-lived tortoise or snake. Not all providers offer it, and it usually costs more and needs booking. The calculator shows it at 1.25 to 1.6 times the private price, our estimate from the one published list we have that prices both.
Can I use the calculator outside the US?
Yes. Choose the UK, Canada or Australia and it switches to published prices for that country, in local currency. Choose somewhere else and it shows US prices in dollars as a guide. Outside the US, most extras show as a local quote and stay out of the total. Local prices can differ a lot, so treat the result as a rough guide.
