A human cremation rate as high as 71%[2], the figure for Australia, supports a crowded pet aftercare market with long menus of extras: paw prints, velvet bags, photo frames. Most were designed with dogs and cats in mind. For a snake or lizard, choose only what fits, and ask to see the basic private price on its own line.

Burial, scattering and protected species in Queensland
The rules that matter most after a reptile dies usually concern land rather than cremation. Burying on property you don't own, or scattering in a park or waterway, can need permission in Queensland. A small lizard leaves so little ash that many keepers skip scattering entirely and keep it at home, which avoids the question.
In Australia, most pet reptiles are native species kept under a state or territory wildlife licence, and some licences require you to record a death or how the body was disposed of. Check your licence conditions and ask the crematory for a written certificate. Summer heat makes prompt refrigeration important, especially for large pythons and turtles.

A plan for the next few days
- Confirm the death first. Illness, cold and brumation can all make a reptile seem dead when it isn't. Leave the enclosure at its normal warmth and have a vet who treats reptiles or exotics listen for a heartbeat.
- Put on disposable gloves every time you touch the body, then scrub your hands for 20 seconds or more once you're done. Salmonella is common in reptiles.
- Double-bag the body and put it in a tub with a lid and a label on a fridge shelf where no food is kept. The freezer is for a long wait only, and only when a post-mortem is off the table.
- Decide about keepsakes now: a shed left in the tank, a photo of the pattern or, with a tortoise, whether the shell stays with you.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly, giving species, weight and, for a snake, length. We can also send you local options.
- Ask for a written total that says whether the cremation is private, partitioned or communal.
- Leave the enclosure for now if you keep other reptiles, and clean it thoroughly before anything else lives in it.

Paralysis ticks are a well-known risk in the hinterland and bushy suburbs from Currumbin Valley to Tamborine, and many local families have faced a sudden loss because of them. Whatever the cause, most Gold Coast owners choose cremation, as Australians commonly do. Ask whether your pet will be cremated on its own, how many days the ashes take and whether an urn or keepsake is included in the price.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gold Coast?
Usually yes. Brisbane is about 44 miles away, Toowoomba is about 94 miles away and Sunshine Coast is about 97 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Australia attitudes to cremation compare?

Is communal cremation a respectful choice for a reptile?
Yes. In communal cremation your reptile is cremated with other animals and no ashes come back, but reputable providers handle it with the same care and scatter or bury the ashes together in a dedicated place. It suits keepers who don't want an urn at home. Ask where the shared ashes go; some providers can tell you the location so you can visit.
Can a vet put my reptile to sleep at home in Gold Coast?
Some mobile vets offer home euthanasia for reptiles, but not all, because reptiles need species-specific sedation. Ask whether the vet has experience with your species and whether they can take your reptile to a crematory afterwards. If home visits aren't available, a quiet appointment at the start or end of clinic hours is a gentle alternative.
Do I have to use the crematory my Gold Coast vet recommends?
No. Your vet's arrangement is convenient, but you can choose any provider that serves Gold Coast and ask them to collect from the clinic. For a reptile, it's worth asking whether they have handled your species before and how they keep very small bodies separate from others.
