Bendigo, Victoria
Where Bendigo keepers turn for help
Lake Weeroona, Rosalind Park and the tracks through Greater Bendigo National Park are where many local owners spent their time outdoors with a pet. Those places come up again and again when families talk about remembering an animal. Parks Victoria and the council each have their own expectations about scattering, so ask before you go, and avoid days of total fire ban when the bush is closed or risky.
Bendigo pairs grand gold-rush buildings in the centre with brick homes on roomy blocks in Kangaroo Flat, Strathdale and Epsom, and bush blocks out toward Maiden Gully and beyond. A pickup from town is simple; a property down a gravel track in the forest takes longer to reach. Give your suburb or road name when you ask, or say whether you plan to drive your pet in yourself, which many families here prefer.
Looking a little further afield from Bendigo can widen your options. Providers that serve Melbourne may also collect here, and one of them might offer a partitioned or fully private cremation for small pets at a lower minimum fee. For a gecko or corn snake, that minimum is most of what you'll pay, so it's the number worth comparing.
With roughly 102,000 residents, Bendigo is the 4th-largest of the 5 Victoria communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Ballarat (60 miles), Melbourne (82 miles, a larger centre) and Toorak (85 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
1,200
Estimated reptile-owning households in Bendigo
How we calculated this
102,000 ÷ 2.5 = 40,800 households; × 3% (reptile) = 1,200. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
3%[1]
3% of Australian households keep reptiles.
71%[2]
Australian cremation rates hovered around 70-72% between 2020 and 2023, with Sydney and Melbourne often above 80%.
6 million[3]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[4]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
We built the this numbers from UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and Animal Medicines Australia, Pets in Australia 2025 (media release), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial or cremation? The view from Australia
Cremation is the everyday choice in Australia: about 71%[2] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity helps reptile keepers, because local crematories are well established and nobody needs to explain wanting ashes home. The gap is experience with unusual species, so the practical step is simply to ask how often a provider sees snakes, lizards and tortoises.
For the Australia figure we rely on FuneralSmart (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bendigo rather than as pet data.
Seasonal risks for reptiles in Bendigo
Seasons change reptile behavior as much as they change timing. Many species eat less and barely move in the cooler months, and tortoises may hibernate. If your reptile stopped moving during a seasonal slowdown in Bendigo, a vet check is the kind thing to do before you make any plans at all.

How much to budget in Bendigo, by size
Listed prices vary widely even within one state: NSW providers span AUD 150 to 1,824 and Queensland AUD 165 to 3,670[5]. The top of those ranges is large dogs and premium packages, not a python or a dragon. In Bendigo, ask two providers for their lowest individual rate by weight before agreeing to anything.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Victoria: Victoria costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you bury or scatter in Victoria
The rules that matter most after a reptile dies usually concern land rather than cremation. Burying on property you don't own, or scattering in a park or waterway, can need permission in Victoria. A small lizard leaves so little ash that many keepers skip scattering entirely and keep it at home, which avoids the question.
In Australia, most pet reptiles are native species kept under a state or territory wildlife licence, and some licences require you to record a death or how the body was disposed of. Check your licence conditions and ask the crematory for a written certificate. Summer heat makes prompt refrigeration important, especially for large pythons and turtles.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Victoria level first; our Victoria rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Bendigo or your HOA adds anything.
A plan for the next few days
- Confirm the death first. A cold, sick or brumating reptile can look lifeless. Keep it at its usual enclosure temperature and ask a reptile or exotics vet to check for a heartbeat.
- Put on disposable gloves before handling, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Reptiles often carry Salmonella.
- Double-bag the body and put it in a tub with a lid and a label on a fridge shelf where no food is kept. The freezer is for a long wait only, and only when a post-mortem is off the table.
- Decide about keepsakes now: a shed skin from the enclosure, a photo of the markings or, for a tortoise, whether to keep the shell.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your clinic, and tell them the species, how heavy it is and, if it's a snake, how long. Or ask us to send you local options.
- Ask for a written total that says whether the cremation is private, partitioned or communal.
- Leave the enclosure for now if you keep other reptiles, and clean it thoroughly before anything else lives in it.
Memorials that suit a reptile
Summer in Bendigo is hot and dry, with runs of days over 35C, and the box-ironbark bush around the city carries real fire risk. When it's scorching, choose the coolest room in the house, rest your pet on an old blanket, surround the body with frozen water bottles and arrange collection that day if you can. Winter is the opposite problem: cold, frosty nights, when an unheated shed keeps things steady.

Questions people ask
Why does the Bendigo page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. FuneralSmart (2023) reports about 71%[2] of Australia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bendigo?
Usually yes. Ballarat is about 60 miles away, Melbourne is about 82 miles away and Toorak is about 85 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I bury my reptile at home in Victoria?
Often yes, on land you own and subject to local rules on depth and distance from water. Bury deep enough that animals can't dig it up, away from wells and vegetable beds, and never in a pot you'll keep indoors. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your reptile with you wherever you go.
Can I keep my tortoise's shell instead of cremating it?
Yes, but only if you decide before cremation. A shell can be cremated along with the body, or cleaned and preserved by a specialist and kept whole. Tell the provider in writing which you want. If your tortoise is a protected species, check the rules before ever selling or giving the shell away.
Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?
It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Bendigo about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
Do I need to report the death of a licensed reptile?
It depends on where you live and your licence type. Some reptile-keeping licences require you to record deaths or disposal, so check your licence conditions or contact the issuing authority. Ask the crematory for a written certificate; it's a simple record that covers you if questions come up later.
