In France, only about 44.91%[1] of people are cremated, and backyard burial of pets is common. If you're burying a reptile, remember that many species carry Salmonella: wear gloves, bury well away from water and vegetable beds, and wash your hands thoroughly. If burial doesn't feel right, cremation is available through most vets.

Permits, paperwork and burial in Grand Est
Cremating a reptile needs no permit, but what happens around it can be regulated in Grand Est: burying on your own land, scattering ashes and, for some species, what you may do with the body or the shell. It pays to know the basics before you decide. If your reptile needed a permit to keep, check that permit's conditions too.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle. Only individual cremation returns your reptile's ashes. France has its own registration rules for some non-domestic species, so if your reptile needed a declaration or certificate to keep, keep that paperwork with its records. Prices rise with weight, and most reptiles sit in the lowest band.
Step by step, from first check to ashes
- If a sitter or neighbor found your reptile, have them take pictures of the tank and the thermostat setting before anything is touched.
- Have them wear gloves, bag the body, close it in a tub with a lid, write a label and put it in the fridge far from anything edible.
- Phone your usual vet and ask whether the clinic can receive the body from your sitter. Many will hold it until you're back.
- Don't cut the trip short for the cremation. A body that is chilled and sealed, or sitting at the clinic, can safely wait for several days.
- Travelling with your reptile when it died? Any local vet can confirm death, and can then either keep the body cold until you drive home or point you to a crematory nearby.
- Check your other animals first when you get home, especially if a heating fault may have played a part.
Memorials that suit a reptile
Strasbourg has a more continental climate than most of France, with warm, sometimes hot summers and cold winters that bring frost and fog. In summer, a pet's body should be cooled within a few hours, wrapped and kept in the coolest room with ice packs nearby. Why does the Strasbourg page quote a human cremation rate?

Can I take my reptile's ashes with me to another country?
Usually yes. Pet ashes are generally allowed through customs and on flights, but check the airline's rules and carry the cremation certificate. A tortoise shell is different: if the species is protected under wildlife-trade rules, moving the shell across a border can need a permit, so keep any paperwork that came with your tortoise and ask before you travel.
Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?
It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Strasbourg about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
