Around 76.0%[1] of people in Germany are cremated, one of the higher shares you'll find anywhere. Where cremation is this ordinary, keepers tend to think of it first, and home burial of a reptile is more a question of garden space than of tradition. For apartment keepers and renters, cremation is usually the practical answer anyway.

Before a home burial anywhere in Bavaria, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.
Germany has a large reptile-keeping community and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) that routinely offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation. Home burial is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[7]. For a protected tortoise, keep its documents; they may be needed if the shell is ever passed on.
The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- If you're unsure, wait and call. Don't freeze, bury or book a cremation until a vet has confirmed death, ideally with a Doppler probe.
- If you keep a collection, raise a necropsy (post-mortem) with the vet before anything is cremated, and use the fridge, not the freezer, if you want one.
- Keep children and anyone with a weak immune system away from the body and the cleanup.
- Choose between private and communal cremation. For a small lizard, ask how much ash to expect so you can pick a keepsake that fits.
- Arrange collection or drop-off. A sealed tub is enough to take a small reptile to the clinic yourself; a big tortoise or a long snake is a job for the provider's van.
- Get the return date and price in writing, with the urn or container on the same quote.

Keep young children and anyone with a weakened immune system away. For venomous species, use tongs near the head, because a bite reflex can remain.
