Saying goodbye to your reptile in Delhi

Delhi, India

Reptile aftercare in Delhi: the local picture

Delhi's summers are among the hottest of any big city, often above 40°C in May and June, followed by the humid monsoon. In that heat, a pet's body needs cooling right away: wrap it in a towel with ice packs near the belly and back, and keep it in an air-conditioned room. Winters are cooler and often foggy, which can slow traffic, so allow extra time for collection.

Delhi households range from flats in apartment societies and older colonies to large bungalows with gardens, and across the wider capital region many families live in gated high-rises in Gurugram and Noida. That affects aftercare: a garden burial may be possible in some homes, but in most flats cremation is the practical choice. When you ask for options, include your area, building access and whether a car can reach the door.

A city the size of Delhi usually has what smaller places lack: at least one vet who sees reptiles every day, and often an exotics hospital with a Doppler probe for checking a faint heartbeat. That matters more for a snake or tortoise than for a dog, because the first question is often whether your reptile has died at all or is simply cold, stressed or brumating. Get that answer before anyone mentions cremation.

With roughly 11,320,000 residents, Delhi is one of the India communities we cover.

80%[1]

India's cremation rate was estimated at about 80% in 2014.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep reptiles.

700,000[3]

There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release; we only apply it to this.

Cremation customs in India, applied to reptiles

With about 80%[1] of people in India cremated, pet crematories here tend to be busy and competitive. For a reptile that usually means a choice of providers and fair minimum fees. It doesn't mean every one of them is used to a tortoise shell or a 12-foot python, so ask about your species before you agree to anything.

That India rate is a human one, published by Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). We quote it for Delhi only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

What Delhi's climate means for aftercare

Local weather matters for reptiles in two ways: how stable your vivarium stays through heat waves, cold snaps and power cuts, and whether burying outdoors is practical. A provider serving Delhi will know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year for a reptile the size of yours.

Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Delhi

Municipal collection is cheap in some Asian cities but usually doesn't return ashes. In Tokyo's Shinjuku ward it costs JPY 3,000[5], and a private small-pet cremation costs about 4.8x[6] as much. If you want your reptile's ashes back in Delhi, make sure you're booking an individual cremation, not a collection service.

Permits, paperwork and burial in India

Before a home burial anywhere in India, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.

Step by step, from first check to ashes

  1. Take a breath. Once your reptile is cool and sealed in the fridge, nothing has to happen today.
  2. Confirm with a vet if there's any chance of brumation, cold shock or deep torpor.
  3. Wash everything the body touched with hot, soapy water, then disinfect, and wash your hands well.
  4. Compare two quotes for private cremation if you have time; minimum fees for small pets vary a lot.
  5. Ask three questions: how often they cremate reptiles, how they keep a small body separate, and how much ash to expect.
  6. Plan where the ashes will go, from a tiny locket for a gecko to an urn for a tortoise. The ashes weight estimator helps you size it.

Sheds, shells and keepsakes

Hindu tradition makes cremation the norm for people in India, around 80% of deaths, so many Delhi families find pet cremation feels natural. Pet ownership has grown quickly in the city, and so has aftercare. Ask whether a private cremation lets you be present, how the ashes are returned, and how long it takes. Some families choose to immerse ashes in a river, as they would for a relative.

Questions people ask

Why does the Delhi page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014) reports about 80%[1] of India residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

How do I get a large snake or tortoise out of a Delhi apartment?

Use a strong, lidded tub rather than a bag, and ask a second person to help if it's heavy. Take the service lift if your building has one and tell the front desk a collection is coming. Many providers will collect from inside your home if you give them the weight, the floor and any stairs.

Are there exotics vets open at night in Delhi?

Larger cities often have at least one emergency hospital that sees exotics, but not every overnight clinic does. Phone before you drive and ask specifically about reptiles. If your reptile has clearly died, there's usually no need for an emergency visit: seal it in a tub in the fridge and call an exotics vet in the morning.

How long until I get my reptile's ashes back?

Many families get private cremation ashes back within one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[8] is commonly quoted in the US. From a smaller town, where the crematory may collect only on certain days, it can take longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether the ashes come by post or for collection.

Will a crematory near Delhi accept a snake?

Most pet crematories will cremate a snake, but experience varies. Give the species, weight and length when you call. A long python may need to be coiled into a container that fits the chamber door, and a few smaller operations have a size limit. Ask how often they handle snakes and whether the cremation is private.

Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?

It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Delhi about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
