Milan has hot, humid summers and cold, often foggy winters typical of the Po Valley. In July and August, apartments can stay very warm even at night, so move your pet to the coolest room and lay them on a towel over frozen packs. In winter a cool room gives you more time. Burial or cremation? The view from Italy
With about 38.16%[1] of people cremated, Italy has fewer pet crematories than high-cremation areas, which can mean a longer trip for your reptile. Small bodies travel easily, though, and most vets can arrange it. Ask how long the ashes take to come back, since a regional crematory may collect only once or twice a week.

What Lombardy allows for burial and ashes
Moving remains is simpler than moving a live reptile, but a shell from a protected tortoise species can still need paperwork if it crosses a national border. If you might one day move abroad with your tortoise's shell or ashes, hold on to the certificate or permit issued with the animal. The notes below cover what Lombardy allows closer to home.
Step by step, from first check to ashes
- Tell your child simply and honestly that their gecko or turtle has died. Phrases like "gone to sleep" can make bedtime frightening.
- Let an adult do all the handling, gloves on. The CDC says children younger than five should be kept away from reptiles and the places they live, because of Salmonella.
- Offer a way to say goodbye without touching: a drawing for the box, a short note or a favorite photo.
- Let them help choose whether the ashes come home or the pet is buried in the garden. What counts is that their opinion was wanted.
- Save something they can hold, perhaps a shed skin behind glass or a single scute inside a little locket.
- Wash hands together afterwards, then disinfect everything the reptile came into contact with before the tank gets a new occupant.

A post-mortem is most useful after an unexpected death or when other reptiles share your home. Cremation can still follow, with the ashes returned as normal.
Are there exotics vets open at night in Milan?
Larger cities often have at least one emergency hospital that sees exotics, but not every overnight clinic does. Phone before you drive and ask specifically about reptiles. If your reptile has clearly died, there's usually no need for an emergency visit: seal it in a tub in the fridge and call an exotics vet in the morning.
Can a vet put my reptile to sleep at home in Milan?
Some mobile vets offer home euthanasia for reptiles, but not all, because reptiles need species-specific sedation. Ask whether the vet has experience with your species and whether they can take your reptile to a crematory afterwards. If home visits aren't available, a quiet appointment at the start or end of clinic hours is a gentle alternative.
Can I bury my reptile in the garden in Italy?
In many European countries you can bury a small pet on your own land, with conditions such as a minimum soil depth and distance from water. Germany, for instance, requires at least 50 cm of soil cover[8]. Rules differ by country and municipality, so check locally. Cremation avoids the question if you rent.
