Snake, lizard and tortoise cremation in Palermo

Palermo, Sicily

How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Palermo

Italy has a lower human cremation rate than northern Europe, and in Sicily burial traditions remain especially strong. Pet cremation is available, however, and more Palermo families choose it each year. Many households also care for community animals living in their courtyard or street. When you get a quote, check that your pet is cremated alone, what kind of container the ashes return in and whether pickup costs extra.

Palermo's historic center is a tangle of narrow streets around the Kalsa, Ballarò and the Capo, where many families live in old palazzi without lifts, while newer districts toward Libertà and out to Mondello have apartment blocks. Traffic is intense and double parking is a way of life, so a vehicle may struggle to stop near your door. When you ask about collection, give precise directions and a nearby place to park.

Plenty of keepers in Palermo don't own a car, which makes getting a body to a vet the first puzzle. A small reptile in a sealed, opaque tub can travel by taxi or rideshare discreetly, though it's courteous to tell the driver. For anything larger, a home collection earns its fee. Ask whether the provider charges by distance or a flat rate across the city.

Palermo is home to about 676,000 people, the largest of the 2 Sicily communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Catania (103 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Palermo routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep reptiles.

700,000[3]

There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and Embrace Pet Insurance.

What local cremation culture means for keepers

With about 38.16%[1] of people cremated, Italy has fewer pet crematories than high-cremation areas, which can mean a longer trip for your reptile. Small bodies travel easily, though, and most vets can arrange it. Ask how long the ashes take to come back, since a regional crematory may collect only once or twice a week.

For the Italy figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Palermo rather than as pet data.

Palermo weather and your reptile

Wherever you are, the first rule with a reptile is to confirm death before anything else, because a cold or brumating reptile can seem lifeless. After that, keep the body in a sealed tub in the fridge. In warm weather, ask for collection within a day or two; in cold weather, you'll usually have a little more time.

Reptile cremation prices in Palermo

In France, a guide from insurer SantéVet puts collective cremation of a 20 kg dog at €70 to €120 and individual at €150 to €250[5]. A reptile weighing a few hundred grams should sit well below those figures. In Palermo, ask for the price by weight and whether a minimum charge applies regardless of size.

Permits, paperwork and burial in Sicily

Cremating a reptile needs no permit, but what happens around it can be regulated in Sicily: burying on your own land, scattering ashes and, for some species, what you may do with the body or the shell. It pays to know the basics before you decide. If your reptile needed a permit to keep, check that permit's conditions too.

The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step

  1. Leave the heating as it is for a moment and write down the basking-spot and cool-end readings. They are the first clue your vet will ask about.
  2. Watch before you touch. Spend a whole minute watching the throat and sides for any slow breathing, and check for sunken eyes or stiffness in the body.
  3. Lift your reptile out with gloved hands onto a clean towel in a shallow box, and keep it at room temperature until someone qualified has checked it.
  4. Ring the clinic as soon as it opens and ask for a same-day slot. Name the species so they book a vet who is comfortable with reptiles.
  5. Once death is confirmed, let the calendar decide storage: the fridge for a pickup within two days, the freezer for anything longer.
  6. Ask for a written quote that lists the species, the weight and whether ashes are coming home. For a rough number before you call, try our cost calculator.
  7. Strip and disinfect the enclosure last, once the body has been collected, rather than tackling two hard jobs in the same hour.

Honoring a long, quiet bond

Palermo summers are long and hot, and when the scirocco blows in from Africa the temperature can top 40°C for days, with dry, dusty air. When a pet dies during one of those hot spells, close the shutters, lay the body on a cool tiled floor under a damp sheet with frozen bottles alongside, and get collection booked before evening. The mild, rainy winters give more time, though shutters should stay closed on sunny days.

Questions people ask

How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Palermo page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?

It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Palermo about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.

My reptile died after a power cut. What should I do?

First make sure it really has died: a chilled or overheated reptile can be torpid rather than dead, so bring the room back to normal temperature gradually and ask a vet to check. Then tell the vet what temperatures the enclosure reached, especially if you keep other reptiles, because they may need checking too.

Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?

Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.

Can I keep my reptile's shed skin as a keepsake?

Yes, and many keepers do. A clean, complete shed shows every scale and marking. Handle it with gloves, let it dry fully and store it flat in a sealed frame or display box away from damp. Turtles that shed their scutes leave small translucent plates that fit neatly in a locket.

My reptile died within its first year. Is that common?

It's less common than some claims suggest. A peer-reviewed University of Kent survey found only 3.6%[7] of pet snakes, chelonians and lizards died within their first year, though rates varied by species, with chameleons highest. If your reptile died young, a vet can help you understand why, which may protect any others you keep.
