Snake, lizard and tortoise cremation in Nagoya

Nagoya, Aichi

How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Nagoya

Nagoya is Japan's car city, at the heart of Aichi's auto industry, and more households here drive than in Tokyo or Osaka. That means many families take their pet to a crematorium themselves, though home collection and mobile cremation vehicles are also available. Homes range from apartments near Sakae to detached houses in the eastern hills. Share your ward and whether you'd like to travel or have your pet collected.

Many Nagoya owners remember their pet most in a particular place: a sunny window, a small garden in the eastern suburbs, or the grounds around Nagoya Castle, Tsuruma Park or the Higashiyama hills. Japanese pet aftercare is well established, and a cremation where the family attends and gathers the bones is common. If you'd prefer something quieter, ashes returned in an urn is equally respectful.

Big cities tend to have active reptile clubs, rescue groups and keepers' forums, and they're an underrated source of local knowledge. Members often know which Nagoya crematory handled their last monitor lizard well and which one hesitated. It's worth one message before you choose, especially if your reptile is unusually large, venomous or part of a bigger collection.

Nagoya is home to about 2,296,000 people.

For a second opinion on price, Hamamatsu (57 miles), Kyoto (65 miles) and Nara (71 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Nagoya routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

99.97%[1]

In 2023, 99.97% of deaths in Japan were cremated (1364 crematoria).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep reptiles.

700,000[3]

There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial

With about 99.97%[1] of people in Japan cremated, pet crematories here tend to be busy and competitive. For a reptile that usually means a choice of providers and fair minimum fees. It doesn't mean every one of them is used to a tortoise shell or a 12-foot python, so ask about your species before you agree to anything.

The Japan figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Seasons, brumation and timing in Nagoya

Whatever the season in Nagoya, a small reptile's body keeps best in an ordinary household fridge, not on a windowsill or in an outdoor bin. If the fridge feels wrong to you, a cool box with frozen water bottles works for a day. Either way, label the container clearly so nobody opens it by mistake.

What reptile cremation costs in Nagoya

One Tokyo pet memorial park charges JPY 14,300 for communal and JPY 22,000 for individual cremation for pets lighter than 5 kg[5], a band that covers almost any pet reptile. Many Japanese providers also offer a witnessed service at a higher price. Ask providers in Nagoya which tier includes the return of the ashes.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Aichi: Aichi costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules in Aichi

You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Aichi and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.

In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, often with a short ceremony and the option of a temple columbarium, and many pet funeral halls accept reptiles. Ask whether the ashes are returned rather than assuming it. Some pet turtles are covered by invasive species rules, so never release a turtle, living or dead, into a river or pond.

A calm checklist for keepers in Nagoya

  1. Book the final appointment with a vet who treats reptiles regularly, and check whether sedation comes first. The usual approach is one injection to bring sleep, then a second to end life.
  2. Settle the aftercare before the day, because the consulting room is no place to weigh up options. Let the clinic know in advance if you'd like a private cremation with the ashes coming back.
  3. Pack a familiar hide or towel in the carrier. In cold weather, keep it warm on the journey with a wrapped heat pack.
  4. Ask the vet to confirm death with a Doppler before heading home. After the injection, a reptile's heart may keep up a slow beat for some time.
  5. Decide whether to stay in the room. Many keepers do; others say goodbye beforehand. Both are loving choices.
  6. Read the cremation form before signing, checking private or communal and writing down any request about a shell, shed or keepsake.
  7. Pay ahead if the clinic allows it, so the last few minutes aren't about a card machine.

Sheds, shells and keepsakes

Nagoya's summers are hot and humid, often among the hottest of Japan's big cities, with the rainy season in June and July and typhoons into autumn. A pet's body needs cooling within hours: wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs near the belly and back, and keep the room air-conditioned. Winters are cold but mostly dry, giving you a little more time, though arranging aftercare in the next day or so is still advisable.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Nagoya?

The closest communities we cover are Hamamatsu (about 57 miles), Kyoto (about 65 miles) and Nara (about 71 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Nagoya too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Nagoya page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?

Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a reptile?

In private cremation your reptile is cremated alone and only its ashes come back. In communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes are returned. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share a chamber but are kept apart; ask exactly how separation works, because it matters most for very small bodies.

How do I get a large snake or tortoise out of a Nagoya apartment?

Use a strong, lidded tub rather than a bag, and ask a second person to help if it's heavy. Take the service lift if your building has one and tell the front desk a collection is coming. Many providers will collect from inside your home if you give them the weight, the floor and any stairs.

Do I have to use the crematory my Nagoya vet recommends?

No. Your vet's arrangement is convenient, but you can choose any provider that serves Nagoya and ask them to collect from the clinic. For a reptile, it's worth asking whether they have handled your species before and how they keep very small bodies separate from others.
