Few authorities inspect how a pet crematory keeps a small body apart from others, and Tokyo is unlikely to be an exception. That puts the job of asking on you. The rules summarized below cover what you may do with a body or ashes; a promise that your reptile is cremated alone belongs in a written agreement.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, often with a short ceremony and the option of a temple columbarium, and many pet funeral halls accept reptiles. Ask whether the ashes are returned rather than assuming it. Some pet turtles are covered by invasive species rules, so never release a turtle, living or dead, into a river or pond.
A calm checklist for keepers in Minato
- Tell your child simply and honestly that their gecko or turtle has died. Phrases like "gone to sleep" can make bedtime frightening.
- Let an adult do all the handling, wearing gloves. The CDC advises keeping children under five away from reptiles and their habitats because of Salmonella.
