How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Amsterdam
Amsterdam families spend time in the Vondelpark, the Amsterdamse Bos and along the IJ, but most pets in the city live in apartments and on houseboats, and many owners want the ashes back to keep at home. Individual cremation, where your pet is cremated alone and the ashes returned, is widely offered in the Netherlands. Ask for that in writing, since a collective cremation returns no ashes.
Amsterdam's narrow canal houses and apartment blocks come with the famously steep Dutch staircases, and many homes have no garden at all; some people live on houseboats. That makes burying a pet at home rarely possible and carrying a body down to the street hard, so home collection is what most owners ask for. When you book, mention the floor, whether there is a lift or a hoist beam, and whether a vehicle can stop on your canal street.
Pet crematories are rarely in short supply in a big metro like Amsterdam. Experience with reptiles is another matter. A provider that cremates dozens of dogs a week may see a ball python twice a year, so ask directly how they contain a 40-gram gecko so nothing is lost, and whether they can take a six-foot snake or an 80-pound tortoise. In Netherlands, about 68.37%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most vets offer pet cremation routinely, but fewer have thought about reptiles specifically. If your vet seems unsure about a snake's length or a tortoise's shell, it's perfectly reasonable to contact a crematory directly and ask the questions yourself.

Rules reptile keepers should know in North Holland
Moving remains is simpler than moving a live reptile, but a shell from a protected tortoise species can still need paperwork if it crosses a national border. If you might one day move abroad with your tortoise's shell or ashes, hold on to the certificate or permit issued with the animal. The notes below cover what North Holland allows closer to home.
In the Netherlands, reptile keeping is popular and pet crematoria are used to small animals. Individual (individuele) cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Several pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost[8], though reptile policies are less common, so check yours. Ask how the crematorium keeps a very small body separate.
A calm checklist for keepers in Amsterdam
- Ask how long the clinic can hold your reptile and confirm it will be kept cold. A small body can usually stay there for a few days.
- Say whether you want a post-mortem before anything is arranged, because freezing and cremation both rule it out later.
- Find out which crematory the clinic uses and whether its reptile cremations are individual or shared with other animals.
- Take your reptile home instead if you prefer to bury it in the garden or use another provider, and request a sealed container with a label.
- Check the release paperwork: your reptile's name, species and the service you chose should all be written on it.
- Ask for a call when the ashes reach the clinic, and find out if a quieter time can be arranged for collecting them.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Amsterdam's maritime climate is mild and damp, with cool summers, grey winters and frequent wind and rain. That gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body in a cool room on a blanket and away from radiators. During summer heat waves, which the Netherlands now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about cool storage if a weekend gets in the way.

Will a crematory near Amsterdam accept a snake?
Most pet crematories will cremate a snake, but experience varies. Give the species, weight and length when you call. A long python may need to be coiled into a container that fits the chamber door, and a few smaller operations have a size limit. Ask how often they handle snakes and whether the cremation is private.
