Snake, lizard and tortoise cremation in Rotterdam

Rotterdam, South Holland

How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Rotterdam

Rotterdam's maritime climate is mild, wet and windy, with few hard freezes and summers that are warm rather than hot. A pet's body kept in a cool room stays stable overnight while you decide. During a summer heat wave, when top-floor flats warm up quickly, keep the body cool with ice packs and arrange collection sooner. Cold winter weeks give you the most time to decide.

Rotterdam is a city of apartments, from postwar blocks in Zuid and Kralingen to towers along the Maas at Kop van Zuid, and many residents cycle rather than drive. Steep, narrow Dutch staircases and scarce parking can make carrying a pet's body out of the building a real challenge. When you arrange pickup, mention the stairs, whether there is a lift and where a car can legally stop for a few minutes.

Big cities tend to have active reptile clubs, rescue groups and keepers' forums, and they're an underrated source of local knowledge. Members often know which Rotterdam crematory handled their last monitor lizard well and which one hesitated. It's worth one message before you choose, especially if your reptile is unusually large, venomous or part of a bigger collection.

Rotterdam's population is around 651,000, the largest of the 2 South Holland communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, The Hague (13 miles), Utrecht (30 miles) and Haarlem (32 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Rotterdam routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

68.37%[1]

In 2023, 68.37% of deaths in the Netherlands were cremated (108 crematoria).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep reptiles.

700,000[3]

There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and Embrace Pet Insurance; we only apply it to this.

Cremation customs in Netherlands, applied to reptiles

The human cremation figure for Netherlands, around 68.37%[1], reflects a real mix of habits, and keepers' forums show the same divide, between garden burials and private cremation. Neither camp is wrong. Size often settles it: a hatchling turtle fits under a rose bush, while a 40-pound tortoise needs more thought.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Netherlands figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Rotterdam tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Rotterdam weather and your reptile

Wherever you are, the first rule with a reptile is to confirm death before anything else, because a cold or brumating reptile can seem lifeless. After that, keep the body in a sealed tub in the fridge. In warm weather, ask for collection within a day or two; in cold weather, you'll usually have a little more time.

Paying for a reptile's cremation in Rotterdam

In France, a guide from insurer SantéVet puts collective cremation of a 20 kg dog at €70 to €120 and individual at €150 to €250[5]. A reptile weighing a few hundred grams should sit well below those figures. In Rotterdam, ask for the price by weight and whether a minimum charge applies regardless of size.

Burial, scattering and protected species in South Holland

Before a home burial anywhere in South Holland, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.

In the Netherlands, reptile keeping is popular and pet crematoria are used to small animals. Individual (individuele) cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Several pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost[7], though reptile policies are less common, so check yours. Ask how the crematorium keeps a very small body separate.

What to do when your reptile dies in Rotterdam

  1. Leave the heating as it is for a moment while you note the temperatures at the basking spot and the cool end. Your vet's first question will be about them.
  2. Watch before you touch. Spend a whole minute watching the throat and sides for any slow breathing, and check for sunken eyes or stiffness in the body.
  3. Lift your reptile out with gloved hands onto a clean towel in a shallow box, and keep it at room temperature until someone qualified has checked it.
  4. Ring the clinic as soon as it opens and ask for a same-day slot. Name the species so they book a vet who is comfortable with reptiles.
  5. Once death is confirmed, let the calendar decide storage: a collection in the next two days means the fridge; a longer wait means the freezer.
  6. Ask for a written quote that lists the species, the weight and whether ashes are coming home. For a rough number before you call, try our cost calculator.
  7. Strip and disinfect the enclosure last, once the body has been collected, rather than tackling two hard jobs in the same hour.

Honoring a long, quiet bond

Roughly two in three Dutch funerals are cremations, and pet cremation is well established. With most Rotterdam households living without a garden of their own, cremation is simply the practical route. Useful questions for a provider: is it an individual cremation, may you attend, is pickup included, and when will the ashes be back? Some Dutch providers offer a farewell room where the family can sit with the pet first.

Questions people ask

Why does the Rotterdam page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rotterdam?

Usually yes. The Hague is about 13 miles away, Utrecht is about 30 miles away and Haarlem is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I keep my reptile's shed skin as a keepsake?

Yes, and many keepers do. A clean, complete shed shows every scale and marking. Handle it with gloves, let it dry fully and store it flat in a sealed frame or display box away from damp. Turtles that shed their scutes leave small translucent plates that fit neatly in a locket.

Can any vet in Rotterdam confirm my reptile has died?

Yes. Any vet can confirm death, even one that mostly sees cats and dogs, though a reptile or exotics vet is more used to it. The most reliable check uses a Doppler probe to listen for a very slow heartbeat. Call ahead, mention the species, and keep your reptile at its normal temperature until you get there.

Can I take my reptile's ashes with me to another country?

Usually yes. Pet ashes are generally allowed through customs and on flights, but check the airline's rules and carry the cremation certificate. A tortoise shell is different: if the species is protected under wildlife-trade rules, moving the shell across a border can need a permit, so keep any paperwork that came with your tortoise and ask before you travel.

Can I freeze my reptile before cremation?

Yes, once death is definitely confirmed. Double-bag the body, place it in a labelled, lidded tub and keep it away from food. Freeze only if the wait will be more than a couple of days and you don't want a post-mortem, because freezing damages tissue. For shorter waits, the fridge is enough.
