Getting reptile aftercare sorted in Stavanger
Stavanger mixes the white wooden houses of the old town with newer apartment blocks and family homes spreading out toward Sandnes and Sola. Many households have a car, which makes it easier to take your pet to the vet or a cremation provider yourself, but home collection is also worth asking about if you live up steep steps or have no parking. Tell the provider your address and access when you request options, so the plan fits your home.
Many people in Stavanger spend free time outdoors, around Mosvatnet, along the Jæren beaches or at a family cabin, and pets often come along. Those places tend to become part of how a pet is remembered. If you would like to keep ashes at home or take a small portion to a favorite spot later, ask any provider in writing whether the cremation is individual, so you know the ashes returned belong to your pet alone.
Providers serving Stavanger often collect from clinics on a fixed route, so you may hear "Tuesday" rather than "today". Ask the clinic which day the van comes. If you'd rather keep your reptile at home until then, drop it off the evening before, so it never waits at the clinic over a weekend.
With roughly 144,000 residents, Stavanger is one of the Rogaland communities we cover.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Burial is still the tradition for many families in Norway, where about 49.27%[1] of people are cremated. That can make cremating a gecko or corn snake feel unusual, but it's a routine request at pet crematories. Your vet will be used to both, so ask openly about either and choose what suits your home and your plans.
The Norway figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing a goodbye around Stavanger's weather
Whatever the season in Stavanger, a small reptile's body keeps best in an ordinary household fridge, not on a windowsill or in an outdoor bin. If the fridge feels wrong to you, a cool box with frozen water bottles works for a day. Either way, label the container clearly so nobody opens it by mistake.

Reptile cremation prices in Stavanger
In France, a guide from insurer SantéVet puts collective cremation of a 20 kg dog at €70 to €120 and individual at €150 to €250[5]. A reptile weighing a few hundred grams should sit well below those figures. In Stavanger, ask for the price by weight and whether a minimum charge applies regardless of size.

Permits, paperwork and burial in Rogaland
Before a home burial anywhere in Rogaland, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.
A plan for the next few days
- Leave the heating as it is for a moment while you note the temperatures at the basking spot and the cool end. Your vet's first question will be about them.
- Watch before you touch. Give it a full minute: look at the throat and flanks for a slow breath, and note whether the eyes look sunken or the body feels stiff.
- Lift your reptile out with gloved hands onto a clean towel in a shallow box, and keep it at room temperature until someone qualified has checked it.
- Ring the clinic as soon as it opens to request an appointment that day, and say what species it is so the receptionist picks a vet who knows reptiles.
- Once death is confirmed, let the calendar decide storage: a collection in the next two days means the fridge; a longer wait means the freezer.
- Ask for a written quote that lists the species, the weight and whether ashes are coming home. For a rough number before you call, try our cost calculator.
- Strip and disinfect the enclosure last, after the body has gone, so you aren't facing both jobs at once.
Remembering your reptile in Stavanger
The west coast of Norway is mild for its latitude but wet and windy for much of the year, and summers rarely get very hot. That cool climate gives you a little more time after a pet dies at home: a cool room, a blanket underneath and a call to your vet the same day is usually enough. If the ground is waterlogged or frozen, a garden burial may not be practical, which is one reason many Stavanger families choose cremation.

Questions people ask
Why does the Stavanger page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 49.27%[1] of Norway residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I keep my tortoise's shell instead of cremating it?
Yes, but only if you decide before cremation. A shell can be cremated along with the body, or cleaned and preserved by a specialist and kept whole. Tell the provider in writing which you want. If your tortoise is a protected species, check the rules before ever selling or giving the shell away.
Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?
It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Stavanger about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
Can I take my reptile's ashes with me to another country?
Usually yes. Pet ashes are generally allowed through customs and on flights, but check the airline's rules and carry the cremation certificate. A tortoise shell is different: if the species is protected under wildlife-trade rules, moving the shell across a border can need a permit, so keep any paperwork that came with your tortoise and ask before you travel.
Can I keep my reptile's shed skin as a keepsake?
Yes, and many keepers do. A clean, complete shed shows every scale and marking. Handle it with gloves, let it dry fully and store it flat in a sealed frame or display box away from damp. Turtles that shed their scutes leave small translucent plates that fit neatly in a locket.
Can my children help bury our pet turtle?
They can take part without handling the body. Turtles and other reptiles often carry Salmonella, and health officials at the CDC recommend that under-fives not touch reptiles or anything in their enclosures. Let an adult place the turtle, sealed, in the ground, and let children choose the spot, add a stone or plant a flower. Everyone should wash their hands well afterwards.
