Lisbon, Portugal
What arranging reptile cremation in Lisbon is like
Lisbon is a city of hills, stairs and narrow streets, and many pets live in older apartment buildings in Alfama, Graça, Campo de Ourique or Arroios, often several floors up with no lift. When you ask about collection, say which floor you are on, whether the stairwell is narrow, and whether a car can stop outside. On steep lanes where parking is almost impossible, a provider may need to plan how to reach your door.
Most aftercare in Lisbon is arranged in Portuguese, though many vets and providers are comfortable in English, which helps the city's large international community. Your vet is usually the first call: many practices can arrange cremation or explain the options. Ask whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or collective, and what is included in the price, such as collection and an urn.
Home euthanasia is available in Lisbon for reptiles as well as cats and dogs, though not every mobile vet is comfortable with species that need specific sedation. If you'd like a calm goodbye in your own living room, ask whether the vet has put a bearded dragon or tortoise to sleep before, and whether they can take your reptile straight to a crematory afterwards.
With roughly 505,000 residents, Lisbon is the largest of the 2 Portugal communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Cascais (15 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lisbon too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
6 million[1]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[2]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
We haven't found a published cremation rate for Lisbon, so we won't guess at local attitudes. What we can say is that reptile keepers everywhere lean toward keeping something back, whether ashes, a shed or a shell, because these are long, quiet relationships. Plan that keepsake first; it tells you which kind of cremation you need.
Lisbon weather and your reptile
Whatever the season in Lisbon, a small reptile's body keeps best in an ordinary household fridge, not on a windowsill or in an outdoor bin. If the fridge feels wrong to you, a cool box with frozen water bottles works for a day. Either way, label the container clearly so nobody opens it by mistake.

Lisbon prices, from gecko to giant tortoise
In France, a guide from insurer SantéVet puts collective cremation of a 20 kg dog at €70 to €120 and individual at €150 to €250[4]. A reptile weighing a few hundred grams should sit well below those figures. In Lisbon, ask for the price by weight and whether a minimum charge applies regardless of size.

Permits, paperwork and burial in Portugal
Few authorities inspect how a pet crematory keeps a small body apart from others, and Portugal is unlikely to be an exception. That puts the job of asking on you. The rules summarized below cover what you may do with a body or ashes; a promise that your reptile is cremated alone belongs in a written agreement.
Step by step, from first check to ashes
- If a sitter or neighbor found your reptile, have them take pictures of the tank and the thermostat setting before anything is touched.
- Have them wear gloves, seal the body in a bag inside a lidded tub, label it and refrigerate it on a shelf well clear of food.
- Phone your usual vet to see if your sitter can bring the body to the clinic. Often they'll keep it there until you return.
- Don't cut the trip short for the cremation. A body that is chilled and sealed, or sitting at the clinic, can safely wait for several days.
- Travelling with your reptile when it died? Any local vet can confirm death, and can then either keep the body cold until you drive home or point you to a crematory nearby.
- Check your other animals first when you get home, especially if a heating fault may have played a part.
Ways to remember a reptile locally
Lisbon summers are hot and dry, and a heatwave can push temperatures well above 35°C, while winters are mild and wet. If your pet dies at home in summer, close the shutters, keep them in the coolest room on a towel and place cold packs near the body. In the cooler months, an unheated room usually gives you enough time to call your vet and let family say goodbye.

Questions people ask
Can I freeze my reptile before cremation?
Yes, once death is definitely confirmed. Double-bag the body, place it in a labelled, lidded tub and keep it away from food. Freeze only if the wait will be more than a couple of days and you don't want a post-mortem, because freezing damages tissue. For shorter waits, the fridge is enough.
How much ash will I get back from my reptile?
Cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[3], so the amount follows size closely. A leopard gecko returns a gram or two, a bearded dragon about a tablespoon, a ball python a few ounces and a large tortoise several pounds. Shelled species return a little more because the shell is bone. The ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your pet.
Can I take my reptile's ashes with me to another country?
Usually yes. Pet ashes are generally allowed through customs and on flights, but check the airline's rules and carry the cremation certificate. A tortoise shell is different: if the species is protected under wildlife-trade rules, moving the shell across a border can need a permit, so keep any paperwork that came with your tortoise and ask before you travel.
Will a crematory near Lisbon accept a snake?
Most pet crematories will cremate a snake, but experience varies. Give the species, weight and length when you call. A long python may need to be coiled into a container that fits the chamber door, and a few smaller operations have a size limit. Ask how often they handle snakes and whether the cremation is private.
How long until I get my reptile's ashes back?
Many families get private cremation ashes back within one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[6] is commonly quoted in the US. From a smaller town, where the crematory may collect only on certain days, it can take longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether the ashes come by post or for collection.
Can a vet put my reptile to sleep at home in Lisbon?
Some mobile vets offer home euthanasia for reptiles, but not all, because reptiles need species-specific sedation. Ask whether the vet has experience with your species and whether they can take your reptile to a crematory afterwards. If home visits aren't available, a quiet appointment at the start or end of clinic hours is a gentle alternative.
