Please don't: a body left in water can spread disease to wild turtles, and releasing turtles is restricted in many places. - Take a breath. Once your reptile is cool and sealed in the fridge, nothing has to happen today.
- Confirm with a vet whenever deep torpor, cold shock or brumation could explain what you're seeing.
- Wash everything the body touched with hot, soapy water, then disinfect, and wash your hands well.
- Compare two quotes for a private cremation when time allows; the minimum charge for a small pet differs widely.
- Ask three questions: are reptiles routine for them, what keeps a tiny body apart in the chamber, and roughly what ash quantity comes back.

Questions people ask
Can I freeze my reptile before cremation?
Yes, once death is definitely confirmed. Double-bag the body, place it in a labelled, lidded tub and keep it away from food. Freeze only if the wait will be more than a couple of days and you don't want a post-mortem, because freezing damages tissue. For shorter waits, the fridge is enough.
How long until I get my reptile's ashes back?
Many families get private cremation ashes back within one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[6] is commonly quoted in the US. From a smaller town, where the crematory may collect only on certain days, it can take longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether the ashes come by post or for collection.
Will a crematory near Porto accept a snake?
Most pet crematories will cremate a snake, but experience varies. Give the species, weight and length when you call. A long python may need to be coiled into a container that fits the chamber door, and a few smaller operations have a size limit. Ask how often they handle snakes and whether the cremation is private.
Can my children help bury our pet turtle?
They can take part without handling the body. Turtles and other reptiles often carry Salmonella, and health officials at the CDC recommend that under-fives not touch reptiles or anything in their enclosures. Let an adult place the turtle, sealed, in the ground, and let children choose the spot, add a stone or plant a flower. Everyone should wash their hands well afterwards.
How much does it cost to cremate a snake or lizard in Porto?
Published prices for small pets outside the US give a good guide. In the UK, individual cremation of a cat-sized pet is roughly £160 to £190; in Australia the median for pets under 5 kg is about AUD 412; in Ireland individual cremation starts from €150 for pets under 2 kg. Can I bury my reptile in the garden in Portugal?
In many European countries you can bury a small pet on your own land, with conditions such as a minimum soil depth and distance from water. Germany, for instance, requires at least 50 cm of soil cover[7]. Rules differ by country and municipality, so check locally. Cremation avoids the question if you rent.
