In a smaller place like Lucerne, the nearest vet who really knows reptiles may be an hour or more away, often in a larger centre such as Zurich. Your local vet can still help: any vet can confirm death with a stethoscope or Doppler, keep your reptile refrigerated and send it to the crematory they use for cats and dogs. Burial or cremation? The view from Switzerland
Cremation now covers 90%[1] of human deaths in Switzerland, so many younger keepers grew up with cremation as the default for people and pets alike. Reptile keepers also tend to plan carefully, and plenty decide on aftercare years before they need it, writing the provider's number next to the vet's in the care log.
That Switzerland rate is a human one, published by bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). We quote it for Lucerne only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Local rules in Switzerland
The rules that matter most after a reptile dies usually concern land rather than cremation. Burying on property you don't own, or scattering in a park or waterway, can need permission in Switzerland. A small lizard leaves so little ash that many keepers skip scattering entirely and keep it at home, which avoids the question.
The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- Take a breath. With the body chilled and sealed, the rest can wait until tomorrow.
- Confirm with a vet whenever deep torpor, cold shock or brumation could explain what you're seeing.
- Wash everything the body touched with hot, soapy water, then disinfect, and wash your hands well.
- Compare two quotes for a private cremation when time allows; the minimum charge for a small pet differs widely.
- Ask three questions: are reptiles routine for them, what keeps a tiny body apart in the chamber, and roughly what ash quantity comes back.
- Plan where the ashes will go, whether that's a locket small enough for a gecko or a proper urn for a tortoise. Use the ashes weight estimator to get the size right.
Memorials that suit a reptile
Most people in Lucerne live in apartments, from old-town buildings on both banks of the Reuss to newer blocks in Kriens, Emmen and Horw, and plenty of households manage without a car. The old town is largely closed to traffic. Many families get private cremation ashes back within one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[8] is commonly quoted in the US. From a smaller town, where the crematory may collect only on certain days, it can take longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether the ashes come by post or for collection.
Is communal cremation a respectful choice for a reptile?
Yes. In communal cremation your reptile is cremated with other animals and no ashes come back, but reputable providers handle it with the same care and scatter or bury the ashes together in a dedicated place. It suits keepers who don't want an urn at home. Ask where the shared ashes go; some providers can tell you the location so you can visit.
