Home burial and scattering are different: England and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.

Many UK tortoises are hibernated each winter, and a hibernating tortoise can look lifeless, so ask a vet to check first. Some tortoise species are protected under wildlife-trade rules; keep any certificate that came with yours and don't sell a shell without checking.

Can I keep my tortoise's shell instead of cremating it?
Yes, but only if you decide before cremation. A shell can be cremated along with the body, or cleaned and preserved by a specialist and kept whole. Tell the provider in writing which you want. If your tortoise is a protected species, check the rules before ever selling or giving the shell away.
