How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Cardiff
Wales is wet and mild, and Cardiff gets plenty of rain blowing in from the Atlantic, but it rarely gets very hot or very cold. After a pet dies at home there is usually time to think. Lay your pet on a blanket in the coolest room, keep radiators off, and add cold packs if the weather turns warm. That lets family come round to say goodbye before collection.

Cremation customs in United Kingdom, applied to reptiles
Because cremation is the norm in United Kingdom, where the human rate stands near 80.46%[1], some pet crematories let owners be present at the start. Few keepers ask for this with a reptile, but you can. It is one way to be certain a small body was handled on its own, and some providers charge a modest fee for it.
We take the United Kingdom rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Cardiff, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasonal risks for reptiles in Cardiff
In any climate, a large reptile needs more planning than a small one. A gecko fits in a fridge; a 60-pound tortoise doesn't. If yours is big, ask the provider in Cardiff for a collection time that suits the weather, and keep the body in the coolest room, on a hard floor, out of the sun until then.

Before you bury or scatter in Wales
Moving remains is simpler than moving a live reptile, but a shell from a protected tortoise species can still need paperwork if it crosses a national border. If you might one day move abroad with your tortoise's shell or ashes, hold on to the certificate or permit issued with the animal. The notes below cover what Wales allows closer to home.
The UK has about 700,000[3] pet tortoises and turtles and 600,000[8] pet snakes, so most pet crematoria have seen reptiles, if not often. Many UK tortoises are hibernated each winter, and a hibernating tortoise can look lifeless, so ask a vet to check first. Some tortoise species are protected under wildlife-trade rules; keep any certificate that came with yours and don't sell a shell without checking.

Who to call and what to do, in order
- Note what happened. Read the enclosure thermometers, and mention any power cut or failed heater to your vet, particularly when other reptiles live under the same roof.
- Look gently for signs of life with the tank at its usual warmth: the tongue, the eyes, the faint rise of a breath. A vet should then make the confirmation.
- Handle with gloves, and use tongs near the head if the species is venomous. A bite reflex can remain after death.
- Store the body cold in a sealed tub, inside two bags, as soon as the vet has confirmed death.
- Tell the provider about the shell or the size ahead of pickup. Keeping a tortoise shell is possible, but the decision has to come before the cremation, not after.
- Keep a shed or scute if you have one; dry it and store it flat in a frame.
- Give yourself time. The quiet of an unlit vivarium can hit hard. There's no rush to take it down.
Keeping your reptile close
Cardiff's pets live mostly in terraced streets like Cathays, Canton, Roath and Splott, in flats around Cardiff Bay, and in family houses further out in Llandaff, Rhiwbina and Pontprennau. Terraced roads are often lined with parked cars, so tell the provider where they can stop and whether there are steps to the front door. If you are in a flat by the Bay, mention lifts, entry systems and any parking restrictions.

Do crematories near Cardiff take venomous snakes?
Many will, but you must tell them the species in advance. Handle the head only with tongs, place the body in a rigid, sealed container and label it clearly. Venom remains dangerous after death, and a bite reflex can persist for a while. Some providers ask for extra handling time, which may affect the price.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a reptile?
In private cremation your reptile is cremated alone and only its ashes come back. In communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes are returned. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share a chamber but are kept apart; ask exactly how separation works, because it matters most for very small bodies.
Can I bury my reptile at home in Wales?
Often yes, on land you own and subject to local rules on depth and distance from water. Bury deep enough that animals can't dig it up, away from wells and vegetable beds, and never in a pot you'll keep indoors. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your reptile with you wherever you go.
