Florence, Alabama
Finding reptile-savvy help in Florence
The Tennessee River shapes life in Florence, from the riverside parks below Wilson Dam to the lakes above and below it. Many owners picture their pet's last place somewhere along the water or on family land in the hills north of town. With a private cremation, the ashes you get back are only your pet's, so you could scatter part of them and keep the rest. Check rules for public shoreline first.
Florence is the largest of the Shoals cities on the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama, across the water from Sheffield, Muscle Shoals and Tuscumbia, and about 60 miles from Huntsville. Many families live in older neighborhoods with good-sized yards or in homes out in the rolling Lauderdale County countryside. When you ask for options, give your address and say whether you're in town or out in the county.
Getting a reptile to a crematory from Florence is usually simpler than people expect. Most pet reptiles are small, and you can take yours to the local vet yourself in a lidded box. For a heavy tortoise or a long snake, ask whether the provider collects from homes out this way and whether mileage is added; a clear total up front avoids surprises later.
Florence is home to about 42,581 people, the 11th-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Huntsville, about 61 miles (99 km) away, which is where some providers serving Florence are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Muscle Shoals (6 miles), Athens (41 miles) and Decatur (42 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
42.3%[1]
The NFDA projected Alabama's cremation rate at 42.3% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
If a number here surprises you, the primary material is UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release; we only apply it to this.

Burial or cremation? The view from Alabama
With cremation at only 42.3%[1] for people in Alabama, pet cemeteries tend to be more common than in cremation-heavy areas. That opens an option many reptile keepers overlook: a small plot with a marker and a place to visit. Prices vary widely, so ask for the smallest plot size and whether a casket is required.
The Alabama percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Florence, not as a count of pets.
Florence weather and your reptile
Wherever you are, the first rule with a reptile is to confirm death before anything else, because a cold or brumating reptile can seem lifeless. After that, keep the body in a sealed tub in the fridge. In warm weather, ask for collection within a day or two; in cold weather, you'll usually have a little more time.

Florence prices, from gecko to giant tortoise
Nationally, PetMD puts group (communal) cremation from about $50 and private from about $100[5]. In Florence, the gap between quotes usually comes from the extras rather than the cremation itself: home pickup, after-hours fees and the container. For a tiny reptile, ask whether a partitioned or small-pet private option has a lower minimum.

Before you bury or scatter in Alabama
You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Alabama and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.
Alabama keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Florence.
We keep Alabama's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Alabama rules summary. Before a home burial in Florence, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A calm checklist for keepers in Florence
- Don't lift alone. Moving a large sulcata or a long python is a two-person job with a board or a sturdy tote, and your back will thank you.
- Weigh it if you safely can, or make a fair guess, and for a snake take the length from snout to the end of the tail. Quotes and chamber planning depend on those two numbers.
- Lay the body on a cool, hard floor in whichever room stays darkest, keep other pets out, and tuck cloth-wrapped ice packs against each side.
- Ask for collection with lifting help, and describe gates, steps and how close a vehicle can get to your door.
- Raise the shell question before anyone arrives. Keeping it means the tortoise goes to a preservation specialist before it goes anywhere else.
- Confirm which weight band you'll be charged in, since a large reptile may be priced like a big dog. The aftercare comparison lays the options side by side.
- Choose an urn for a real quantity of ash, which can run to several pounds for a giant tortoise. The urn size calculator helps.
Sheds, shells and keepsakes
The Shoals have hot, humid summers and cool winters with occasional ice. In warm months, cool your pet's body within a few hours: wrap it in a towel, put ice packs near the belly and back, and keep it in air-conditioning. Because Florence is a drive from the larger metro areas, ask providers about distance and timing up front so there are no surprises.

Questions people ask
Why does the Florence page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 42.3%[1] of Alabama residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?
Usually yes. Muscle Shoals is about 6 miles away, Athens is about 41 miles away and Decatur is about 42 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Huntsville to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Huntsville (roughly 61 miles from Florence) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I have my reptile freeze-dried instead of cremated in Florence?
Yes, a few studios take reptiles, and some keepers like how well scales and markings survive. One Ohio studio lists a bearded dragon at about $850[7], and freeze-drying typically takes 6 to 12 months[8]. By our estimate it costs about six times an average cremation[9]. Keep the body frozen, not refrigerated, if you're considering it, and call the studio before anything else is arranged.
My reptile died within its first year. Is that common?
It's less common than some claims suggest. A peer-reviewed University of Kent survey found only 3.6%[10] of pet snakes, chelonians and lizards died within their first year, though rates varied by species, with chameleons highest. If your reptile died young, a vet can help you understand why, which may protect any others you keep.
Will a crematory near Florence accept a snake?
Most pet crematories will cremate a snake, but experience varies. Give the species, weight and length when you call. A long python may need to be coiled into a container that fits the chamber door, and a few smaller operations have a size limit. Ask how often they handle snakes and whether the cremation is private.
