Dublin, California
Where Dublin keepers turn for help
Dublin shares the Tri-Valley's warm summers, around 89F in July, and chilly winter nights that can dip below 40F. On a hot evening, a bedroom with the air conditioning on and the shades drawn is a good place for your pet to rest until collection. In winter there is usually more time, and many families use it to let children and relatives come by and say goodbye.
Dublin has grown quickly, and much of the city is recent: apartment and condo complexes around the BART stations, and large subdivisions stretching east toward Livermore, while West Dublin's older streets sit against the hills. In a big complex, the building number, your unit, the location of visitor parking and whether there is an elevator are the details that help most. Some complexes also ask that the leasing office be told.
If you keep reptiles near Dublin under a wildlife or exotic animal permit, check whether your permit asks you to record a death or show how the body was dealt with. Requirements vary by place and species, so we don't list them here. A written cremation certificate from the provider is easy to ask for and covers most record-keeping needs.
Dublin's population is around 71,602, the 116th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Fremont, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Dublin run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Pleasanton (4 miles), San Ramon (6 miles) and Hayward (8 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
70.5%[1]
The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and Embrace Pet Insurance.

How California thinks about cremation
In California, about 70.5%[1] of people are cremated, so few will think it odd to cremate a snake or bearded dragon. What does surprise many keepers is how little ash a small reptile leaves, often a teaspoon or less. Knowing that ahead of time helps you pick a keepsake that fits, rather than a standard urn that looks almost empty.
That California rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Dublin only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Timing a goodbye around Dublin's weather
Many keepers in Dublin rely on air conditioning to keep a reptile room safe through July, August and September. If you come home to a silent unit and a motionless lizard, cool the room gradually rather than dunking the animal in cold water, which can shock a live reptile. It goes into a sealed tub and the fridge only after a vet confirms death.
Heat waves bring a risk that's easy to forget: power cuts. When the air conditioning stops during a July, August and September outage, a reptile room can climb far past safe temperatures within hours, especially glass tanks near a sunny window. If you lose a reptile this way, tell your vet it was heat, so they can advise on any others in the same room.

Dublin prices, from gecko to giant tortoise
Rush service is where Dublin bills jump. A 24-hour turnaround typically adds $50 to $150[5], and by our estimate weekend rush at one provider costs six times its weekday fee[6]. For a reptile safely refrigerated, the standard slot, about a week in many places, costs nothing extra.

What California allows for burial and ashes
Few authorities inspect how a pet crematory keeps a small body apart from others, and California is unlikely to be an exception. That puts the job of asking on you. The rules summarized below cover what you may do with a body or ashes; a promise that your reptile is cremated alone belongs in a written agreement.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in Dublin, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do when your reptile dies in Dublin
- Leave the heating as it is for a moment while you note the temperatures at the basking spot and the cool end. Your vet's first question will be about them.
- Watch before you touch. Spend a whole minute watching the throat and sides for any slow breathing, and check for sunken eyes or stiffness in the body.
- Lift your reptile out with gloved hands onto a clean towel in a shallow box, and keep it at room temperature until someone qualified has checked it.
- Ring the clinic as soon as it opens and ask for a same-day slot. Name the species so they book a vet who is comfortable with reptiles.
- Once death is confirmed, let the calendar decide storage: the fridge for a pickup within two days, the freezer for anything longer.
- Ask for a written quote that lists the species, the weight and whether ashes are coming home. For a rough number before you call, try our cost calculator.
- Strip and disinfect the enclosure last, after the body has gone, so you aren't facing both jobs at once.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Many Dublin families moved here recently for work across the Bay Area, and a pet is often the one constant through apartments, new jobs and new schools. That continuity can make a loss hit harder than people expect. Families here often look for ways of remembering that suit a life that may move again: small keepsakes, photos, or a memory tied to a favorite window or patio.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[1] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Dublin follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Fremont to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fremont (roughly 11 miles from Dublin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Dublin?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 89°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dublin?
Usually yes. Pleasanton is about 4 miles away, San Ramon is about 6 miles away and Hayward is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I cremate a turtle or tortoise in Dublin if it came from a pet store as a hatchling?
Yes. Any turtle or tortoise can be cremated, whatever its size or where it came from. Handle it with gloves, since turtles commonly carry Salmonella; it's why the US has banned selling turtles under 4 inches since 1975. A hatchling leaves very little ash, so ask about a small-pet private option.
Can I bury my reptile at home in California?
Often yes, on land you own and subject to local rules on depth and distance from water. Bury deep enough that animals can't dig it up, away from wells and vegetable beds, and never in a pot you'll keep indoors. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your reptile with you wherever you go.
