Cremation habits in Florida and your reptile
With about 72.5%[1] of people in Florida cremated, pet crematories here tend to be busy and competitive. For a reptile that usually means a choice of providers and fair minimum fees. It doesn't mean every one of them is used to a tortoise shell or a 12-foot python, so ask about your species before you agree to anything.

Seasonal risks for reptiles in Christmas
Heat affects burial too. Ground in Christmas can bake hard in summer, and shallow graves attract animals quickly. If you'd like to bury a reptile at home, dig deep, cover well and wait for a cooler evening. Burial, scattering and protected species in Florida
You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Florida and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.

A plan for the next few days
- Leave the heating as it is for a moment while you note the temperatures at the basking spot and the cool end. Your vet's first question will be about them.
- Watch before you touch. Spend a whole minute watching the throat and sides for any slow breathing, and check for sunken eyes or stiffness in the body.
- Lift your reptile out with gloved hands and settle it on a fresh towel inside a low box, then leave it at room temperature until a qualified person has examined it.
- Ring the clinic as soon as it opens to request an appointment that day, and say what species it is so the receptionist picks a vet who knows reptiles.
- Once death is confirmed, let the calendar decide storage: the fridge for a pickup within two days, the freezer for anything longer.

- Strip and disinfect the enclosure last, once the body has been collected, rather than tackling two hard jobs in the same hour.
