Snake, lizard and tortoise cremation in Hollywood

Hollywood, Florida

Getting reptile aftercare sorted in Hollywood

South Florida heat and humidity last most of the year in Hollywood, with August highs above 90F, so a pet's body needs cooling right away: wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs around the belly and back, and keep the air conditioning running. Hurricane season runs from June through November, and storms can close roads and cut power. If that happens, keep your pet as cool as you can and arrange collection once it's safe.

Hollywood's high water table and sandy soil make backyard burial difficult, and most condos and many rentals don't allow it anyway, which is one reason cremation is so common in Broward County. If you want your pet's ashes, choose a private cremation; a communal cremation costs less and no ashes come back. Ask for a written total covering collection, cremation and the container, so there are no surprises.

In a city like Hollywood, there may be one or two clinics that genuinely know reptiles, and plenty of general practices that will see a snake only in an emergency. If your usual vet is a dog-and-cat practice, call them anyway. They can confirm death, refrigerate your reptile safely and pass it to their crematory, even if they'd refer a living reptile elsewhere.

With roughly 157,019 residents, Hollywood is the 12th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Hollywood are based about 13 miles away in Hialeah, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Families in Hollywood often end up using a provider from Hallandale Beach (2 miles), Dania Beach (3 miles) and Aventura (4 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

How Florida thinks about cremation

In Florida, about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, so few will think it odd to cremate a snake or bearded dragon. What does surprise many keepers is how little ash a small reptile leaves, often a teaspoon or less. Knowing that ahead of time helps you pick a keepsake that fits, rather than a standard urn that looks almost empty.

For the Florida figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Hollywood rather than as pet data.

Hollywood weather and your reptile

Heat affects burial too. Ground in Hollywood can bake hard in summer, and shallow graves attract animals quickly. If you'd like to bury a reptile at home, dig deep, cover well and wait for a cooler evening. Some keepers here cremate first and bury the ashes under a shady plant once the worst of May, June, July, August, September and October has passed.

Outdoor tortoise pens are popular in hot places like Hollywood, and big species such as sulcatas dig deep burrows to escape the heat. A tortoise that hasn't come out for a day or two in August may simply be sheltering. Check gently and call a vet if you're worried, rather than digging it out in the midday sun or assuming it has died.

Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Hollywood

Small pets pay the most per pound. By our estimate, private cremation works out at roughly $9 a pound for a 15 lb pet and about $4 a pound at 60 lb[5]. A 1 lb bearded dragon in Hollywood usually pays the same minimum as that 15 lb pet, so the number worth comparing is each provider's lowest private price.

The Florida price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Before you bury or scatter in Florida

Cremating a reptile needs no permit, but what happens around it can be regulated in Florida: burying on your own land, scattering ashes and, for some species, what you may do with the body or the shell. It pays to know the basics before you decide. If your reptile needed a permit to keep, check that permit's conditions too.

Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Hollywood.

For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Hollywood can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

Who to call and what to do, in order

  1. Tell your child simply and honestly that their gecko or turtle has died. Phrases like "gone to sleep" can make bedtime frightening.
  2. Let an adult do all the handling, wearing gloves. The CDC advises keeping children under five away from reptiles and their habitats because of Salmonella.
  3. Offer a way to say goodbye without touching: a picture they draw to go in the box, a few written words or a photo they love.
  4. Let them help choose whether the ashes come home or the pet is buried in the garden. What counts is that their opinion was wanted.
  5. Save something they can hold, such as a framed shed skin or a scute in a small locket.
  6. Wash hands together afterwards, then disinfect everything the reptile came into contact with before the tank gets a new occupant.

Keeping your reptile close

Hollywood runs from beachfront condos and older homes near the Broadwalk and the Intracoastal to single-family neighbourhoods further west, and many residents live in apartments or condos with association rules. If your pet dies in a high-rise, think about lifts, security desks and where a vehicle can stop. When you ask for options, mention your building, floor and any front-desk procedure so collection goes smoothly.

Questions people ask

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Hollywood?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Hollywood page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hollywood?

Usually yes. Hallandale Beach is about 2 miles away, Dania Beach is about 3 miles away and Aventura is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 13 miles from Hollywood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

My reptile died after a power cut. What should I do?

First make sure it really has died: a chilled or overheated reptile can be torpid rather than dead, so bring the room back to normal temperature gradually and ask a vet to check. Then tell the vet what temperatures the enclosure reached, especially if you keep other reptiles, because they may need checking too.

Do I have to use the crematory my Hollywood vet recommends?

No. Your vet's arrangement is convenient, but you can choose any provider that serves Hollywood and ask them to collect from the clinic. For a reptile, it's worth asking whether they have handled your species before and how they keep very small bodies separate from others.
