Wabasso, Florida
Finding reptile-savvy help in Wabasso
Wabasso sits close to Pelican Island, the first national wildlife refuge in the United States, and herons, pelicans and ospreys are everyday sights along this stretch of lagoon. Families who watched those birds with a pet beside them on the porch sometimes want the memorial to face the water. A small container of ashes on a sill, or a native planting in the yard, keeps that view part of the tribute.
Summers in Wabasso peak around 91 degrees in August, and winter lows seldom dip much below the low 50s, so there's no cold season to lean on after a death at home. Carry your pet somewhere with the air conditioning running, lay them on a folded sheet over a hard floor, and slide a cold pack in a pillowcase beneath the neck and chest. Aim to have collection arranged within hours rather than overnight.
Power cuts tend to last longer outside big cities, and they're a real danger for reptiles. If your reptile was found cold and motionless after an outage near Wabasso, don't assume the worst straight away. Bring the room back up to its normal temperature slowly, avoid hot water or direct heat, and phone a vet. Think about freezing or cremation only once death is confirmed.
About 1,000 people live in Wabasso, which makes it the 223rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Wabasso are based about 34 miles away in Port St. Lucie, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Wabasso often end up using a provider from Orchid (3 miles), Winter Beach (3 miles) and Sebastian (5 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Burial or cremation? The view from Florida
Because cremation is the norm in Florida, where the human rate stands near 72.5%[1], some pet crematories let owners be present at the start. Few keepers ask for this with a reptile, but you can. It is one way to be certain a small body was handled on its own, and some providers charge a modest fee for it.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Wabasso tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons, brumation and timing in Wabasso
Many keepers in Wabasso rely on air conditioning to keep a reptile room safe through May, June, July, August and September. If you come home to a silent unit and a motionless lizard, cool the room gradually rather than dunking the animal in cold water, which can shock a live reptile. It goes into a sealed tub and the fridge only after a vet confirms death.
In Wabasso's hottest weeks, don't leave your reptile's body in a car, garage or outdoor shed, even briefly, and don't carry it to the vet in a thin bag. Use a lidded tub with a wrapped ice pack beside it, not on top. If the vet is some distance away, make the trip early in the morning or in the evening during August.

What reptile cremation costs in Wabasso
Almost every pet reptile falls into the smallest weight band US crematories publish. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. That's why a 60 g gecko in Wabasso can cost nearly as much as a small dog: you're mostly paying a minimum fee for handling, paperwork and a return container.

Permits, paperwork and burial in Florida
Few authorities inspect how a pet crematory keeps a small body apart from others, and Florida is unlikely to be an exception. That puts the job of asking on you. The rules summarized below cover what you may do with a body or ashes; a promise that your reptile is cremated alone belongs in a written agreement.

Who to call and what to do, in order
- Confirm the death first. A cold, sick or brumating reptile can look lifeless. Keep it at its usual enclosure temperature and ask a reptile or exotics vet to check for a heartbeat.
- Put on disposable gloves every time you touch the body, then scrub your hands for 20 seconds or more once you're done. Salmonella is common in reptiles.
- Double-bag the body and put it in a tub with a lid and a label on a fridge shelf where no food is kept. The freezer is for a long wait only, and only when a post-mortem is off the table.
- Decide about keepsakes now: a shed skin from the enclosure, a photo of the markings or, for a tortoise, whether to keep the shell.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly, giving species, weight and, for a snake, length. We can also send you local options.
- Ask for a written total that says whether the cremation is private, partitioned or communal.
- Leave the enclosure for now if you keep other reptiles, and clean it thoroughly before anything else lives in it.
Memorials that suit a reptile
Wabasso is an unincorporated community on the Indian River County mainland, set between Sebastian and Vero Beach where the Wabasso Causeway crosses the Indian River Lagoon to the barrier island. Houses range from older homes on shaded streets to properties carved out of former citrus groves. Treasure Coast providers usually include Wabasso in their area, though Port St. Lucie, about 34 miles south, is far enough that some quote extra mileage.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Wabasso?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Where are the providers that serve Wabasso actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Port St. Lucie, about 34 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Wabasso and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Wabasso?
The closest communities we cover are Orchid (about 3 miles), Winter Beach (about 3 miles) and Sebastian (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Wabasso too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Wabasso follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will a crematory collect a big tortoise from outside Wabasso?
Many will, especially if you give the weight and describe access. Mileage is sometimes added for rural addresses, so ask for a total. If you can lift safely with help, taking your tortoise to your local vet or directly to the crematory can cut the cost.
Can I scatter my turtle's ashes in a lake or river near Wabasso?
Check local rules first, because some waterways and parks need permission. Ashes are sterile, so they don't carry the disease risk a body would, but they are strongly alkaline, so scatter a small amount and spread it thinly. Many keepers prefer the bank or a nearby planter. Never release a living turtle, or place a body in water, as a tribute.
