Burial or cremation? The view from Illinois
In Illinois, about 60.2%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most vets offer pet cremation routinely, but fewer have thought about reptiles specifically. Seasonal risks for reptiles in Elgin

You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Illinois and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.

Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?

Can my children help bury our pet turtle?
They can take part without handling the body. Turtles and other reptiles often carry Salmonella, and health officials at the CDC recommend that under-fives not touch reptiles or anything in their enclosures. Let an adult place the turtle, sealed, in the ground, and let children choose the spot, add a stone or plant a flower. Everyone should wash their hands well afterwards.
