Kokomo, Indiana
How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Kokomo
This part of north-central Indiana can freeze from November right through March, and January nights dip to about 17F. That long cold season makes a detached garage a workable resting place for a pet's body overnight, provided it sits on a folded blanket. July is different: highs in the mid-80s mean you'll want the coolest indoor floor you have, with ice packs in pillowcases along the spine and belly.
Kokomo, the Howard County seat, lies roughly 48 miles north of Indianapolis on flat farmland, with Wildcat Creek curling through the middle of town. It grew around car-parts and metal factories, and much of its housing is modest single-family homes on regular grid streets, plus newer additions on the south and west sides. A pickup inside the city seldom takes long; rural Howard County addresses just need clear road names.
Getting a reptile to a crematory from Kokomo is usually simpler than people expect. Most pet reptiles are small, and you can take yours to the local vet yourself in a lidded box. For a heavy tortoise or a long snake, ask whether the provider collects from homes out this way and whether mileage is added; a clear total up front avoids surprises later.
With roughly 59,999 residents, Kokomo is the 15th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Kokomo are based about 48 miles away in Indianapolis, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Logansport (23 miles), Marion (25 miles) and Westfield (30 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Kokomo too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

The NFDA projected Indiana's cremation rate at 56.5% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial or cremation? The view from Indiana
Indiana splits its funerals between burial and cremation, with cremation at 56.5%[1]. Pet cemeteries and pet crematories often work side by side there, and some offer a third route: burying cremated remains in a small plot. For a reptile that is a middle path, with a place to visit and no worry about a future house move.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Indiana figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Kokomo tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing a goodbye around Kokomo's weather
Cold keeps a body well, but collections can pause in the worst of January, when lows around Kokomo average about 17°F. Ask whether the vet can keep the body in the practice freezer until the roads clear, rather than trying to keep a large tortoise cold on a porch or in a shed where animals can reach it.
Snow and icy roads around Kokomo in January can delay a collection by a day or two. For a reptile that's rarely a problem once death is confirmed, because the cold and a fridge give you time. If a storm is forecast and your reptile is very ill, ask your vet now what they'd suggest, rather than on a night when the roads are closed.

Reptile cremation prices in Kokomo
Nationally, PetMD puts group (communal) cremation from about $50 and private from about $100[5]. In Kokomo, the gap between quotes usually comes from the extras rather than the cremation itself: home pickup, after-hours fees and the container. For a tiny reptile, ask whether a partitioned or small-pet private option has a lower minimum.

Burial, scattering and protected species in Indiana
Cremating a reptile needs no permit, but what happens around it can be regulated in Indiana: burying on your own land, scattering ashes and, for some species, what you may do with the body or the shell. It pays to know the basics before you decide. If your reptile needed a permit to keep, check that permit's conditions too.
Indiana keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Kokomo.
The Indiana page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Kokomo's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do when your reptile dies in Kokomo
- If you're unsure, wait and call. Don't freeze, bury or book a cremation until a vet has confirmed death, ideally with a Doppler probe.
- If you keep a collection, raise a necropsy (post-mortem) with the vet before anything is cremated, and use the fridge, not the freezer, if you want one.
- Keep children and anyone with a weak immune system away from the body and the cleanup.
- Choose between private and communal cremation. With a small lizard, find out roughly how much ash comes back, then size the keepsake to that.
- Arrange collection or drop-off. Most small reptiles can go to the vet in a sealed tub; for a heavy tortoise or long snake, ask the provider to collect.
- Get the return date and price in writing, including the urn or container.
Ways to remember a reptile locally
Highland Park, where the town keeps a giant preserved steer and an old hollow sycamore stump on display, shows that Kokomo has never been shy about remembering animals. For a household pet, most families here settle on something smaller, like an urn on a curio shelf or a stone by the back fence. Scattering along Wildcat Creek or in a city park should be cleared with the parks office first.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kokomo?
Usually yes. Logansport is about 23 miles away, Marion is about 25 miles away and Westfield is about 30 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Kokomo page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.5%[1] of Indiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Indianapolis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Indianapolis (roughly 48 miles from Kokomo) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does Kokomo's weather affect reptile aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Kokomo, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can my children help bury our pet turtle?
They can take part without handling the body. Turtles and other reptiles often carry Salmonella, and health officials at the CDC recommend that under-fives not touch reptiles or anything in their enclosures. Let an adult place the turtle, sealed, in the ground, and let children choose the spot, add a stone or plant a flower. Everyone should wash their hands well afterwards.
Can I have my reptile freeze-dried instead of cremated in Kokomo?
Yes, a few studios take reptiles, and some keepers like how well scales and markings survive. One Ohio studio lists a bearded dragon at about $850[7], and freeze-drying typically takes 6 to 12 months[8]. By our estimate it costs about six times an average cremation[9]. Keep the body frozen, not refrigerated, if you're considering it, and call the studio before anything else is arranged.
