Apple Valley, Minnesota
Reptile aftercare in Apple Valley: the local picture
Rabbits and other small mammals are popular family pets here, and some live in outdoor hutches. If a rabbit dies outside in winter, bring the body in to a garage or cool room rather than leaving it where predators can reach it. January nights near 9F slow decay; on hot summer afternoons, get the body somewhere cool quickly and call a provider the same day.
Apple Valley grew up in the 1960s and after on open land in western Dakota County, about 16 miles south of Saint Paul, and most of it is still quiet residential streets of ramblers, split-levels and townhomes laid out around Cedar Avenue and Highway 77. Because it is mostly single-family housing with driveways, collection is usually straightforward. South metro services include the city; ask for an all-in written price.
Crematories serving rural areas often collect from vet clinics on set days of the week, so a reptile from Apple Valley may wait a few days before it travels. That's fine once death is confirmed. A sealed tub in a fridge covers a day or two; for a longer wait, freezing is sensible unless you want a post-mortem, which needs a body that hasn't been frozen.
With roughly 55,248 residents, Apple Valley is the 17th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. Saint Paul, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Apple Valley run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Burnsville (4 miles), Eagan (5 miles) and Lakeville (5 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
68.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Minnesota's cremation rate at 68.5% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
In Minnesota, about 68.5%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most vets offer pet cremation routinely, but fewer have thought about reptiles specifically. If your vet seems unsure about a snake's length or a tortoise's shell, it's perfectly reasonable to contact a crematory directly and ask the questions yourself.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Minnesota figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Apple Valley tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons, brumation and timing in Apple Valley
Apple Valley has average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, and that's when many reptiles naturally slow down for brumation. A brumating snake or tortoise can look lifeless for weeks. Before you assume the worst in winter, keep it at its normal temperature and ask a reptile vet to check for a heartbeat. Never freeze an animal you aren't certain has died.
Short winter days in Apple Valley mean less basking and less UVB for several months, and some older reptiles decline over the winter. If you sense yours is near the end, planning in the fall lets you choose a vet, a provider and a keepsake calmly, instead of on an icy evening in January.

Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Apple Valley
Nationally, PetMD puts group (communal) cremation from about $50 and private from about $100[5]. In Apple Valley, the gap between quotes usually comes from the extras rather than the cremation itself: home pickup, after-hours fees and the container. For a tiny reptile, ask whether a partitioned or small-pet private option has a lower minimum.

Rules reptile keepers should know in Minnesota
The rules that matter most after a reptile dies usually concern land rather than cremation. Burying on property you don't own, or scattering in a park or waterway, can need permission in Minnesota. A small lizard leaves so little ash that many keepers skip scattering entirely and keep it at home, which avoids the question.
The official Minnesota local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Apple Valley.
For Minnesota's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Minnesota guide. Local rules in Apple Valley can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Who to call and what to do, in order
- Don't lift alone. Moving a large sulcata or a long python is a two-person job with a board or a sturdy tote, and your back will thank you.
- Weigh it if you safely can, or make a fair guess, and for a snake take the length from snout to the end of the tail. Quotes and chamber planning depend on those two numbers.
- Lay the body on a cool, hard floor in whichever room stays darkest, keep other pets out, and tuck cloth-wrapped ice packs against each side.
- Ask for collection with lifting help, and explain the access: any gates or steps, and where the van can park relative to your door.
- Raise the shell question before anyone arrives. Keeping it means the tortoise goes to a preservation specialist before it goes anywhere else.
- Confirm which weight band you'll be charged in, since a large reptile may be priced like a big dog. The aftercare comparison lays the options side by side.
- Choose an urn for a real quantity of ash, which can run to several pounds for a giant tortoise. The urn size calculator helps.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Apple Valley residents have memories on the eastern trails of Lebanon Hills, around Farquar Lake, or in the neighborhood parks tucked between the subdivisions. City and county parkland each come with their own policies on ashes, so ask the right office first. A shady spot in your own yard or a container of perennials on the patio needs no one's permission.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Saint Paul to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Saint Paul (roughly 16 miles from Apple Valley) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Apple Valley page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 68.5%[1] of Minnesota residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Apple Valley?
Usually yes. Burnsville is about 4 miles away, Eagan is about 5 miles away and Lakeville is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Apple Valley's weather affect reptile aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Apple Valley, with average highs around 83°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will a crematory collect a big tortoise from outside Apple Valley?
Many will, especially if you give the weight and describe access. Mileage is sometimes added for rural addresses, so ask for a total. If you can lift safely with help, taking your tortoise to your local vet or directly to the crematory can cut the cost.
How long until I get my reptile's ashes back?
Many families get private cremation ashes back within one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[7] is commonly quoted in the US. From a smaller town, where the crematory may collect only on certain days, it can take longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether the ashes come by post or for collection.
