Prior Lake, Minnesota
How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Prior Lake
Cleary Lake Regional Park sits on the city's southern side, and the two Prior Lakes shape daily life here, from summer boating to winter ice fishing. Lakes and county parks aren't open for scattering without permission. Plenty of shoreline families instead choose a quiet corner of their own yard, setting a biodegradable urn under a shade tree where a pet used to watch the water.
Prior Lake is a Scott County city built around Upper and Lower Prior Lake, about 19 miles southwest of Minneapolis. Lake homes ring the shoreline, while newer subdivisions and townhouse developments fill the land between County Road 42 and Highway 13. Aftercare services covering Scott County and the southwest metro typically include Prior Lake, and since several operate within a short drive, comparing two written quotes rarely takes long.
If the nearest crematory is a long drive from Prior Lake, taking your reptile there yourself can save a collection fee and lets you hand it over in person. Call ahead for an appointment, bring a cool box, and ask whether you can wait while a small cremation is done or come back later for the ashes.
Prior Lake's population is around 28,140, the 37th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. Minneapolis, roughly 19 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Prior Lake run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Shakopee (4 miles), Savage (4 miles) and Burnsville (8 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Prior Lake too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

What local cremation culture means for keepers
In Minnesota, about 68.5%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most vets offer pet cremation routinely, but fewer have thought about reptiles specifically. If your vet seems unsure about a snake's length or a tortoise's shell, it's perfectly reasonable to contact a crematory directly and ask the questions yourself.
The Minnesota percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Prior Lake, not as a count of pets.
Seasonal risks for reptiles in Prior Lake
Winter power cuts are a real danger for reptiles in Prior Lake. If heat mats and lamps fail on a January night, when lows average about 9°F, a vivarium can cool quickly. A reptile found chilled and still afterwards may be alive but torpid. Warm the room gradually, avoid hot water or direct heat, and call a vet before deciding anything.
Snow and icy roads around Prior Lake in January can delay a collection by a day or two. For a reptile that's rarely a problem once death is confirmed, because the cold and a fridge give you time. If a storm is forecast and your reptile is very ill, ask your vet now what they'd suggest, rather than on a night when the roads are closed.

Prior Lake prices, from gecko to giant tortoise
Nationally, PetMD puts group (communal) cremation from about $50 and private from about $100[5]. In Prior Lake, the gap between quotes usually comes from the extras rather than the cremation itself: home pickup, after-hours fees and the container. For a tiny reptile, ask whether a partitioned or small-pet private option has a lower minimum.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Minnesota: Minnesota costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and protected species in Minnesota
Cremating a reptile needs no permit, but what happens around it can be regulated in Minnesota: burying on your own land, scattering ashes and, for some species, what you may do with the body or the shell. It pays to know the basics before you decide. If your reptile needed a permit to keep, check that permit's conditions too.
The official Minnesota local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Prior Lake.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Minnesota level first; our Minnesota rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Prior Lake or your HOA adds anything.
What to do when your reptile dies in Prior Lake
- If you're unsure, wait and call. Freezing, burial and a cremation booking can all wait for a vet's confirmation, ideally using a Doppler probe.
- If you keep a collection, raise a necropsy (post-mortem) with the vet before anything is cremated, and use the fridge, not the freezer, if you want one.
- Keep children and anyone with a weak immune system well clear of both the body and the enclosure cleaning.
- Choose between private and communal cremation. For a small lizard, ask how much ash to expect so you can pick a keepsake that fits.
- Arrange collection or drop-off. A sealed tub is enough to take a small reptile to the clinic yourself; a big tortoise or a long snake is a job for the provider's van.
- Get the return date and price in writing, with the urn or container on the same quote.
Sheds, shells and keepsakes
January here averages lows around 9F, and both lakes lie frozen for much of the winter. On a frigid night a garage keeps the body of a small animal properly chilled until morning, sealed inside a lidded tote. July highs near 83F bring humid lake-country heat, so in summer head straight for the basement with a thick towel and a few ice packs sleeved in cloth, then phone for collection before noon.

Questions people ask
How do Minnesota attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Minnesota human cremation rate at about 68.5%[1]. We show it on the Prior Lake page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Prior Lake?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 83°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Prior Lake?
Usually yes. Shakopee is about 4 miles away, Savage is about 4 miles away and Burnsville is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Prior Lake actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Minneapolis, about 19 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Prior Lake and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?
Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
Is communal cremation a respectful choice for a reptile?
Yes. In communal cremation your reptile is cremated with other animals and no ashes come back, but reputable providers handle it with the same care and scatter or bury the ashes together in a dedicated place. It suits keepers who don't want an urn at home. Ask where the shared ashes go; some providers can tell you the location so you can visit.
