Stillwater, Minnesota
Finding reptile-savvy help in Stillwater
The St. Croix riverfront, the old Lift Bridge now open to foot and bike traffic, and the overlooks at the top of town are places many Stillwater residents treasure. The river is a federally protected waterway and the parks are public, so scattering there needs permission. Families more often choose their own garden, a relative's land, or an urn on a sill facing the valley.
January lows around 6F and roughly five frozen months mean most Stillwater households choose cremation over a winter grave, and steep bluff yards make digging tricky even in summer. Some families bury ashes in a garden bed after the thaw. When the valley turns humid in July, the cellar beneath an older hillside house often stays cool enough to keep your pet comfortable.
If the nearest crematory is a long drive from Stillwater, taking your reptile there yourself can save a collection fee and lets you hand it over in person. Call ahead for an appointment, bring a cool box, and ask whether you can wait while a small cremation is done or come back later for the ashes.
About 19,354 people live in Stillwater, which makes it the 64th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Stillwater are based about 15 miles away in Saint Paul, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Stillwater sits within easy reach of Oakdale (8 miles), White Bear Lake (9 miles) and Maplewood (10 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Stillwater; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation customs in Minnesota, applied to reptiles
With about 68.5%[1] of people cremated, Minnesota sits between the burial traditions of the past and a cremation-first future. For a reptile, the choice usually comes down to practicalities: do you have land, will you stay, and do you want something to keep? Cremation answers the last question; burial suits keepers with a garden they won't leave.
That Minnesota rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Stillwater only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What Stillwater's climate means for aftercare
With 5 months of freezing lows, the ground in Stillwater can be too hard to dig for much of the winter. If you'd hoped to bury your reptile at home, you have options: once death is confirmed, a small body can stay double-bagged in the freezer until spring, or you can cremate now and bury the ashes when the ground softens.
Stillwater has average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, and that's when many reptiles naturally slow down for brumation. A brumating snake or tortoise can look lifeless for weeks. Before you assume the worst in winter, keep it at its normal temperature and ask a reptile vet to check for a heartbeat. Never freeze an animal you aren't certain has died.

Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Stillwater
Small pets pay the most per pound. By our estimate, private cremation works out at roughly $9 a pound for a 15 lb pet and about $4 a pound at 60 lb[5]. A 1 lb bearded dragon in Stillwater usually pays the same minimum as that 15 lb pet, so the number worth comparing is each provider's lowest private price.

Local rules in Minnesota
Keepers of aquatic turtles sometimes feel drawn to return a turtle to a pond or river after it dies. Please don't: a body left in water can spread disease to wild turtles, and releasing turtles is restricted in many places. The notes below explain the burial and scattering options Minnesota permits, which are the safer routes.

The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- Take a breath. Once your reptile is cool and sealed in the fridge, nothing has to happen today.
- Confirm with a vet if there's any chance of brumation, cold shock or deep torpor.
- Wash everything the body touched with hot, soapy water, then disinfect, and wash your hands well.
- Compare two quotes for a private cremation when time allows; the minimum charge for a small pet differs widely.
- Ask three questions: are reptiles routine for them, what keeps a tiny body apart in the chamber, and roughly what ash quantity comes back.
- Plan where the ashes will go, from a tiny locket for a gecko to an urn for a tortoise. The ashes weight estimator helps you size it.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Stillwater climbs the bluffs above the St. Croix River about 15 miles east of Saint Paul, with Wisconsin just across the water. A historic lumber-era downtown, Victorian houses stacked on steep hillsides and newer subdivisions to the west give the city a varied housing mix. Providers from the east metro usually cover Stillwater, so ask whether pickup on those hilly streets is included and when ashes come back.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Stillwater?
Usually yes. Oakdale is about 8 miles away, White Bear Lake is about 9 miles away and Maplewood is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Stillwater actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Saint Paul, about 15 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Stillwater and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Minnesota?
For people, yes: about 68.5%[1] of Minnesota deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Stillwater follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Stillwater climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 81°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
What should I do if my tortoise dies during hibernation?
First make sure it has died, because a hibernating tortoise can seem completely lifeless. Let it warm to room temperature gradually and ask a reptile vet to check. If it has died, keep it refrigerated and consider a post-mortem, especially if you hibernate other tortoises. Then arrange cremation or burial as you prefer.
What happens if my reptile dies while I'm on vacation?
Your sitter should put on gloves, wrap the body in a sealed bag, put that in a lidded container in the fridge and take photos of the enclosure and thermostat. Then phone your vet, who may agree to hold the body until you're back. You don't need to rush home: a sealed, chilled body keeps for days. Check your other animals as soon as you return, especially if heating was involved.
