Belgrade, Montana
Where Belgrade keepers turn for help
Belgrade winters are cold, with December lows near 10F and frost that can arrive in October and hang on through April. With frozen soil for so many months, digging in a new-build backyard is rarely practical, and cremation tends to come first. July afternoons reach the mid-80s; on a day like that, set your pet's body on a towel in a shaded, air-conditioned room.
Belgrade is Gallatin County's second town, about 10 miles west of Bozeman on the flat valley floor, and it's where the region's main airport sits. Much of its growth has come as new subdivisions of single-family homes on former grain and hay fields. Providers based in the valley often cover both towns, so ask whether they'll collect from your house, whether a fee applies, and when to expect the ashes.
Getting a reptile to a crematory from Belgrade is usually simpler than people expect. Most pet reptiles are small, and you can take yours to the local vet yourself in a lidded box. For a heavy tortoise or a long snake, ask whether the provider collects from homes out this way and whether mileage is added; a clear total up front avoids surprises later.
Belgrade's population is around 13,107, the 8th-largest of the 10 Montana communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Bozeman (10 miles, a larger centre), Helena (69 miles, a larger centre) and Butte-Silver Bow (72 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Belgrade routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
73.4%[1]
Montana had a 73.4% cremation rate in 2024, among the highest in the US.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026.

What local cremation culture means for keepers
With about 73.4%[1] of people in Montana cremated, pet crematories here tend to be busy and competitive. For a reptile that usually means a choice of providers and fair minimum fees. It doesn't mean every one of them is used to a tortoise shell or a 12-foot python, so ask about your species before you agree to anything.
We take the Montana rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Belgrade, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Belgrade weather and your reptile
With 7 months of freezing lows, the ground in Belgrade can be too hard to dig for much of the winter. If you'd hoped to bury your reptile at home, you have options: once death is confirmed, a small body can stay double-bagged in the freezer until spring, or you can cremate now and bury the ashes when the ground softens.
Snow and icy roads around Belgrade in December can delay a collection by a day or two. For a reptile that's rarely a problem once death is confirmed, because the cold and a fridge give you time. If a storm is forecast and your reptile is very ill, ask your vet now what they'd suggest, rather than on a night when the roads are closed.

Reptile cremation prices in Belgrade
Nationally, PetMD puts group (communal) cremation from about $50 and private from about $100[5]. In Belgrade, the gap between quotes usually comes from the extras rather than the cremation itself: home pickup, after-hours fees and the container. For a tiny reptile, ask whether a partitioned or small-pet private option has a lower minimum.

Permits, paperwork and burial in Montana
Few authorities inspect how a pet crematory keeps a small body apart from others, and Montana is unlikely to be an exception. That puts the job of asking on you. The rules summarized below cover what you may do with a body or ashes; a promise that your reptile is cremated alone belongs in a written agreement.

The rules that apply across Montana (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Montana page. Belgrade may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A plan for the next few days
- If a sitter or neighbor found your reptile, have them take pictures of the tank and the thermostat setting before anything is touched.
- Have them wear gloves, seal the body in a bag inside a lidded tub, label it and refrigerate it on a shelf well clear of food.
- Phone your usual vet and ask whether the clinic can receive the body from your sitter. Many will hold it until you're back.
- Don't cut the trip short for the cremation. A body that is chilled and sealed, or sitting at the clinic, can safely wait for several days.
- Travelling with your reptile when it died? A vet wherever you are can confirm death, then either refrigerate the body for the drive home or tell you who cremates locally.
- Check your other animals first when you get home, above all when a heating problem could have been the cause.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Belgrade's open setting gives wide views of the Bridger and Gallatin ranges across the fields. Many families keep a memorial right at home: a flat stone in a young lawn, a chokecherry planted along the fence line, an urn on the mantel. If you'd rather scatter ashes up in the mountains on public land, check with the managing agency before you go.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belgrade?
Usually yes. Bozeman is about 10 miles away, Helena is about 69 miles away and Butte-Silver Bow is about 72 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Belgrade climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, October, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How do Montana attitudes to cremation compare?
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) puts the Montana human cremation rate at about 73.4%[1]. We show it on the Belgrade page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
My reptile died after a power cut. What should I do?
First make sure it really has died: a chilled or overheated reptile can be torpid rather than dead, so bring the room back to normal temperature gradually and ask a vet to check. Then tell the vet what temperatures the enclosure reached, especially if you keep other reptiles, because they may need checking too.
How much ash will I get back from my reptile?
Cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so the amount follows size closely. A leopard gecko returns a gram or two, a bearded dragon about a tablespoon, a ball python a few ounces and a large tortoise several pounds. Shelled species return a little more because the shell is bone. The ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your pet.
Can I keep my reptile's shed skin as a keepsake?
Yes, and many keepers do. A clean, complete shed shows every scale and marking. Handle it with gloves, let it dry fully and store it flat in a sealed frame or display box away from damp. Turtles that shed their scutes leave small translucent plates that fit neatly in a locket.
