Altus, Oklahoma
What arranging reptile cremation in Altus is like
Because of the base, many Altus households are on a military assignment and expect to move within a few years, so cremation is often the practical route: ashes can travel to the next duty station. Families who have farmed around Altus for generations may still prefer a grave on the home place. Whatever you choose, get the provider to spell out every item their fee covers.
Summers in southwest Oklahoma are fierce, with afternoons that routinely climb well into the 90s and past 100 on the worst days, and the wind rarely lets up. A pet who dies in that heat should be kept in the most air-conditioned room you have and handed over within hours rather than days. Winters are milder, though an ice storm can briefly shut down travel across the county.
If the nearest crematory is a long drive from Altus, taking your reptile there yourself can save a collection fee and lets you hand it over in person. Call ahead for an appointment, bring a cool box, and ask whether you can wait while a small cremation is done or come back later for the ashes.
Altus's population is around 18,707, the 25th-largest of the 26 Oklahoma communities we cover.
Altus sits within easy reach of Wichita Falls (68 miles, a larger centre), El Reno (98 miles) and Mustang (103 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Altus; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
58.6%[1]
The NFDA projected Oklahoma's cremation rate at 58.6% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and Embrace Pet Insurance; we only apply it to this.

Cremation habits in Oklahoma and your reptile
When roughly 58.6%[1] of local funerals in Oklahoma are cremations, vets usually have a cremation form ready but may ask fewer questions than you'd like. Volunteer the details yourself: species, weight, length, any shell you want kept and that you'd like the ashes back. A form filled in quickly can default to communal.
The Oklahoma figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What Altus's climate means for aftercare
Whatever the season in Altus, a small reptile's body keeps best in an ordinary household fridge, not on a windowsill or in an outdoor bin. If the fridge feels wrong to you, a cool box with frozen water bottles works for a day. Either way, label the container clearly so nobody opens it by mistake.

Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Altus
In a US survey, 61% of owners said the cost of aftercare worried them[5]. For reptiles the numbers are usually modest, because most sit in the lowest band shown below. The simplest way to keep an Altus quote honest is to give the species, the weight and, for snakes, the length, then ask for one written total.

Before you bury or scatter in Oklahoma
Moving remains is simpler than moving a live reptile, but a shell from a protected tortoise species can still need paperwork if it crosses a national border. If you might one day move abroad with your tortoise's shell or ashes, hold on to the certificate or permit issued with the animal. The notes below cover what Oklahoma allows closer to home.
The official Oklahoma local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Altus.
The Oklahoma page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Altus's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Who to call and what to do, in order
- Note what happened. Read the enclosure thermometers, and mention any power cut or failed heater to your vet, particularly when other reptiles live under the same roof.
- Look gently for signs of life with the tank at its usual warmth: the tongue, the eyes, the faint rise of a breath. A vet should then make the confirmation.
- Handle with gloves, and use tongs near the head of any venomous species, because the bite reflex doesn't always stop when the heart does.
- Store the body cold in a sealed tub, inside two bags, as soon as the vet has confirmed death.
- Tell the provider about the shell or the size before collection. A tortoise shell can be kept, but only if you decide before cremation.
- Keep a shed or scute if there is one to save: let it dry, then lay it flat behind glass.
- Give yourself time. The quiet of an unlit vivarium can hit hard. There's no rush to take it down.

Altus is the Jackson County seat in Oklahoma's far southwestern corner, a flat, open town ringed by cotton and wheat fields and home to Altus Air Force Base. Lawton is the nearest sizable city, and anything larger means a much longer trip. Ask a local clinic where cremation physically takes place, how many days the ashes are away and whether driving time shows up as its own line on the invoice.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Altus?
The closest communities we cover are Wichita Falls (about 68 miles), El Reno (about 98 miles) and Mustang (about 103 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Altus too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Oklahoma?
For people, yes: about 58.6%[1] of Oklahoma deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Altus follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can my children help bury our pet turtle?
They can take part without handling the body. Turtles and other reptiles often carry Salmonella, and health officials at the CDC recommend that under-fives not touch reptiles or anything in their enclosures. Let an adult place the turtle, sealed, in the ground, and let children choose the spot, add a stone or plant a flower. Everyone should wash their hands well afterwards.
Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?
Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
Is it safe to handle my reptile's body?
Yes, with basic hygiene. Reptiles often carry Salmonella, so wear disposable gloves, double-bag the body, keep it away from food and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Keep young children and anyone with a weakened immune system away. For venomous species, use tongs near the head, because a bite reflex can remain.
Can I have my reptile freeze-dried instead of cremated in Altus?
Yes, a few studios take reptiles, and some keepers like how well scales and markings survive. One Ohio studio lists a bearded dragon at about $850[7], and freeze-drying typically takes 6 to 12 months[8]. By our estimate it costs about six times an average cremation[9]. Keep the body frozen, not refrigerated, if you're considering it, and call the studio before anything else is arranged.
