Crosby, Texas
What arranging reptile cremation in Crosby is like
Crosby is an unincorporated community in northeast Harris County, about 20 miles from downtown Houston, between the San Jacinto River and the fringes of Lake Houston. It has a semi-rural feel, with homes on acreage alongside newer subdivisions. Clinics in Crosby, Humble and Baytown are within easy reach, and many Houston-area aftercare services list it in their coverage, but confirm before you call.
Many Crosby families live on an acre or more, with pines, pecans and wide yards where animals spend their days. That space makes home memorials popular. Parts of the area flooded badly during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, so a backyard resting place belongs on the highest part of the lot, well away from ditches. Keeping ashes inside, above floor level, avoids the question.
In a smaller place like Crosby, the nearest vet who really knows reptiles may be an hour or more away, often in a larger centre such as Houston. Your local vet can still help: any vet can confirm death with a stethoscope or Doppler, keep your reptile refrigerated and send it to the crematory they use for cats and dogs. Call them first and mention the species.
With roughly 2,000 residents, Crosby is the 297th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Houston, roughly 21 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Crosby run from there.
Our pages for Barrett (3 miles), Sheldon (5 miles) and Highlands (6 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Crosby as well.

Cremation habits in Texas and your reptile
About 55.7%[1] of people in Texas are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Reptile aftercare follows a similar pattern: garden burial is still common for small lizards and turtles, but more keepers now choose cremation, especially for long-lived animals like tortoises that they want to keep close for years to come.
The Texas figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What Crosby's climate means for aftercare
Heat affects burial too. Ground in Crosby can bake hard in summer, and shallow graves attract animals quickly. If you'd like to bury a reptile at home, dig deep, cover well and wait for a cooler evening. Some keepers here cremate first and bury the ashes under a shady plant once the worst of May, June, July, August and September has passed.
Heat waves bring a risk that's easy to forget: power cuts. When the air conditioning stops during a May, June, July, August and September outage, a reptile room can climb far past safe temperatures within hours, especially glass tanks near a sunny window. If you lose a reptile this way, tell your vet it was heat, so they can advise on any others in the same room.

Crosby prices, from gecko to giant tortoise
Expect Crosby prices to follow size, but only at the top end. Geckos, dragons, corn snakes and box turtles all sit in the lowest band; a big sulcata tortoise or Burmese python is priced like a large dog, and CareCredit's over-90 lb band reaches $350 to $450 for private cremation[5]. Collection, a keepsake urn and a certificate are often extra.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules in Texas
Cremating a reptile needs no permit, but what happens around it can be regulated in Texas: burying on your own land, scattering ashes and, for some species, what you may do with the body or the shell. It pays to know the basics before you decide. If your reptile needed a permit to keep, check that permit's conditions too.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Crosby.
For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in Crosby can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do when your reptile dies in Crosby
- Confirm the death first. A cold, sick or brumating reptile can look lifeless. Keep it at its usual enclosure temperature and ask a reptile or exotics vet to check for a heartbeat.
- Put on disposable gloves every time you touch the body, then scrub your hands for 20 seconds or more once you're done. Salmonella is common in reptiles.
- Double-bag the body and put it in a tub with a lid and a label on a fridge shelf where no food is kept. The freezer is for a long wait only, and only when a post-mortem is off the table.
- Decide about keepsakes now: a shed left in the tank, a photo of the pattern or, with a tortoise, whether the shell stays with you.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your clinic, and tell them the species, how heavy it is and, if it's a snake, how long. Or ask us to send you local options.
- Ask for a written total that says whether the cremation is private, partitioned or communal.
- Leave the enclosure for now when other reptiles share your home, and give it a full clean before any new animal moves in.
Keeping your reptile close
Summers in Crosby run in the mid-90s with thick Gulf humidity, and winters rarely freeze. When a pet dies at home in warm weather, move it inside to the coolest room and cushion it on a blanket, then call a clinic or collection service. Try to have arrangements settled that day, because damp heat works quickly, and many Houston-area services can come out the same afternoon.

Questions people ask
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Crosby page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Crosby?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 95°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Crosby?
Usually yes. Barrett is about 3 miles away, Sheldon is about 5 miles away and Highlands is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Crosby actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Houston, about 21 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Crosby and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I freeze my reptile before cremation?
Yes, once death is definitely confirmed. Double-bag the body, place it in a labelled, lidded tub and keep it away from food. Freeze only if the wait will be more than a couple of days and you don't want a post-mortem, because freezing damages tissue. For shorter waits, the fridge is enough.
Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?
It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Crosby about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
