Joshua, Texas
Getting reptile aftercare sorted in Joshua
Families in Joshua often have a few acres or a big yard, and pets range from cats and rabbits to chickens and backyard birds. Many owners here prefer to keep ashes close to home, sometimes marked by a stone in a favorite corner of the property. Check any HOA rules before placing a permanent marker in a subdivision yard, since some associations limit what can go in front or side gardens.
Joshua sits in northern Johnson County, between Burleson and Cleburne, roughly twenty miles south of Fort Worth. Much of the town is newer subdivisions, with older homes and small acreage on the county roads around it. Services that collect pets from homes here generally come down from the Fort Worth side, so give clear directions if you live beyond the subdivisions.
If the nearest crematory is a long drive from Joshua, taking your reptile there yourself can save a collection fee and lets you hand it over in person. Call ahead for an appointment, bring a cool box, and ask whether you can wait while a small cremation is done or come back later for the ashes.
Joshua is home to about 9,352 people, the 206th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Joshua are based about 20 miles away in Fort Worth, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Burleson (7 miles, a larger centre), Cleburne (8 miles, a larger centre) and Crowley (8 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Joshua as well.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Texas, at about 55.7%[1], yet burial remains familiar. Among reptile keepers you'll find both. A tiny gecko buried under a favorite plant is as valid a goodbye as a private cremation, provided you're sure of the death and bury deep enough to keep scavengers away.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Joshua tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons, brumation and timing in Joshua
Heat affects keepsakes as well as bodies. Resin, wax and some glues soften in a parked car or a sunny window during June, July, August and September, so a frame holding a shed skin or a resin-set scute belongs out of direct sun. Glass, ceramic and metal keepsakes cope far better with summer in Joshua.
Joshua summers are hot, with August highs averaging around 95°F. A reptile's body changes quickly in heat, so once death is confirmed, bring it indoors, seal it in a lidded tub and refrigerate it. A small lizard or snake fits easily on the bottom shelf. For a big tortoise or constrictor that won't fit, ask for same-day collection.

How much to budget in Joshua, by size
Most US pet insurance covers only dogs and cats, and one pet insurer says standard policies rarely pay for cremation even then[5]. A few exotic-pet policies exist, so if you insured your reptile, read the wording before you pay any provider in Joshua. Either way, ask for an itemized receipt; it makes any claim or dispute much simpler.
The Texas price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Before you bury or scatter in Texas
Moving remains is simpler than moving a live reptile, but a shell from a protected tortoise species can still need paperwork if it crosses a national border. If you might one day move abroad with your tortoise's shell or ashes, hold on to the certificate or permit issued with the animal. The notes below cover what Texas allows closer to home.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in Joshua can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- Note what happened. Read the enclosure thermometers, and mention any power cut or failed heater to your vet, particularly when other reptiles live under the same roof.
- Look gently for signs of life at normal temperature: a tongue flick, an eye response, a slow breath. Then call a vet to confirm.
- Handle with gloves, and use tongs near the head of any venomous species, because the bite reflex doesn't always stop when the heart does.
- Store the body cold in a sealed tub, double-bagged, once death is confirmed.
- Tell the provider about the shell or the size ahead of pickup. Keeping a tortoise shell is possible, but the decision has to come before the cremation, not after.
- Keep a shed or scute if you have one; dry it and store it flat in a frame.
- Give yourself time. A dark, silent vivarium is a hard thing to walk past, and it can stay up as long as you need.
Keeping your reptile close
North Texas summers are long and hot in Joshua, with August highs averaging about 95 degrees, and January nights drop to the low thirties. In summer, keep your pet's body indoors where it is coolest and arrange care the same day if at all possible. A winter cold snap buys a little more time, though an unheated garage that swings between frost and afternoon warmth makes a poor holding place.

Questions people ask
Why does the Joshua page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Joshua actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Fort Worth, about 20 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Joshua and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Joshua climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 95°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Joshua?
The closest communities we cover are Burleson (about 7 miles), Cleburne (about 8 miles) and Crowley (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Joshua too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
What happens if my reptile dies while I'm on vacation?
Your sitter should put on gloves, wrap the body in a sealed bag, put that in a lidded container in the fridge and take photos of the enclosure and thermostat. Then phone your vet, who may agree to hold the body until you're back. You don't need to rush home: a sealed, chilled body keeps for days. Check your other animals as soon as you return, especially if heating was involved.
Do crematories near Joshua take venomous snakes?
Many will, but you must tell them the species in advance. Handle the head only with tongs, place the body in a rigid, sealed container and label it clearly. Venom remains dangerous after death, and a bite reflex can persist for a while. Some providers ask for extra handling time, which may affect the price.
