Plainview, Texas
What arranging reptile cremation in Plainview is like
The Llano Estacado has real seasons, unlike much of Texas. July afternoons reach the low nineties, but December through February brings freezing nights, bitter wind and the occasional blizzard. In winter a cold garage can hold your companion safely for a day or so if roads are bad. In summer, the dry heat still means moving them indoors to a cool room promptly.
Plainview is a university town as well as a farm town, and residents range from students and faculty to families who have farmed the surrounding plains for generations. Homes typically have yards with space for a small garden memorial, though wind and sandy soil can be hard on delicate pieces. Many households keep ashes indoors for that reason, on a shelf safe from the dust.
Around Plainview, the local practice may be a mixed or farm vet more used to cattle than chameleons. That's still a good first call. Farm vets confirm deaths every week and know every aftercare route in the district, including which crematory takes small companion animals. Tell them early that you want your reptile cremated individually.
Plainview is home to about 19,314 people, the 154th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Plainview are based about 43 miles away in Lubbock, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Plainview sits within easy reach of Lubbock (43 miles, a larger centre), Amarillo (71 miles, a larger centre) and Clovis (86 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Plainview; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026.

Cremation customs in Texas, applied to reptiles
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Texas, at about 55.7%[1], yet burial remains familiar. Among reptile keepers you'll find both. A tiny gecko buried under a favorite plant is as valid a goodbye as a private cremation, provided you're sure of the death and bury deep enough to keep scavengers away.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Plainview tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
What Plainview's climate means for aftercare
In a Plainview summer, get a reptile's body into the fridge quickly and ask for prompt collection, especially for a large tortoise. In winter you have more time, but outdoor pens and unheated garages can freeze a body solid, which rules out a post-mortem. If you might want one, keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and call the vet early.
Timing a burial is harder where the ground freezes in January, February and December and bakes in June, July and August. Many keepers in Plainview cremate promptly and choose a spot for the ashes later, planting them under a shrub in spring or fall when digging is easy. Mix the ashes well into plenty of soil first, because they're highly alkaline and can harm roots.

Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Plainview
Rush service is where Plainview bills jump. A 24-hour turnaround typically adds $50 to $150[5], and by our estimate weekend rush at one provider costs six times its weekday fee[6]. For a reptile safely refrigerated, the standard slot, about a week in many places, costs nothing extra.

Before you bury or scatter in Texas
You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Texas and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Plainview.
The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. Plainview may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A plan for the next few days
- Take a breath. Once your reptile is cool and sealed in the fridge, nothing has to happen today.
- Confirm with a vet whenever deep torpor, cold shock or brumation could explain what you're seeing.
- Wash everything the body touched in hot water and soap, follow with disinfectant, and finish by scrubbing your own hands.
- Compare two quotes for private cremation if you have time; minimum fees for small pets vary a lot.
- Ask three questions: are reptiles routine for them, what keeps a tiny body apart in the chamber, and roughly what ash quantity comes back.
- Plan where the ashes will go, whether that's a locket small enough for a gecko or a proper urn for a tortoise. Use the ashes weight estimator to get the size right.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Plainview is the seat of Hale County on the High Plains, about 43 miles north of Lubbock along Interstate 27. Lubbock is the nearest hub for many aftercare services, so a home collection may involve a longer drive and a higher travel fee than in a city. Some families find it simpler to take their companion to a local clinic, which can coordinate with a crematory.

Questions people ask
Why does the Plainview page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Plainview?
Usually yes. Lubbock is about 43 miles away, Amarillo is about 71 miles away and Clovis is about 86 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Lubbock to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Lubbock (roughly 43 miles from Plainview) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does Plainview's weather affect reptile aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Plainview, with average highs around 92°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
What if there's no reptile vet near Plainview?
Call your local vet anyway. Any vet can confirm death and store your reptile safely, and most can arrange cremation with the crematory they use for cats and dogs. If your reptile is still alive but unwell, ask them to consult an exotics vet by phone, or plan a drive to a larger centre such as Lubbock.
Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?
Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
