Arranging reptile aftercare in Schertz

Schertz, Texas

How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Schertz

Heat here lingers from May well into October, and Guadalupe County afternoons can stay in the upper 90s for weeks. When an animal dies during the day, keep them inside with the air conditioning running and a towel underneath, and arrange pickup promptly. Give your street and the nearest cross street when you request options; it helps a provider plan the drive up I-35 or FM 3009.

Cibolo Creek winds through this corner of the metro, and the city's parks and trail system give pet owners green space close to home. Families sometimes think of those familiar places when deciding what to do with ashes. Ask the parks department before scattering anything, and consider holding back a portion to keep, especially if you expect to relocate in the next few years.

Rural gardens around Schertz see more wildlife, and a buried reptile can draw foxes, raccoons or badgers. Choose a spot you can cover with a paving slab or a heavy stone, away from where pets and livestock roam. If the ground is rocky or often waterlogged, cremating first and burying the ashes is simpler.

Schertz's population is around 45,978, the 82nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Schertz are based about 16 miles away in San Antonio, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Our pages for Universal City (1 miles), Cibolo (2 miles) and Converse (3 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Schertz as well.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial or cremation? The view from Texas

Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Texas, at about 55.7%[1], yet burial remains familiar. Among reptile keepers you'll find both. A tiny gecko buried under a favorite plant is as valid a goodbye as a private cremation, provided you're sure of the death and bury deep enough to keep scavengers away.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Schertz tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Seasonal risks for reptiles in Schertz

Whatever the season in Schertz, a small reptile's body keeps best in an ordinary household fridge, not on a windowsill or in an outdoor bin. If the fridge feels wrong to you, a cool box with frozen water bottles works for a day. Either way, label the container clearly so nobody opens it by mistake.

How much to budget in Schertz, by size

Nationally, PetMD puts group (communal) cremation from about $50 and private from about $100[5]. In Schertz, the gap between quotes usually comes from the extras rather than the cremation itself: home pickup, after-hours fees and the container. For a tiny reptile, ask whether a partitioned or small-pet private option has a lower minimum.

We keep the detailed Texas price table on one page so it stays current: see Texas prices.

Burial, scattering and protected species in Texas

Some places license venomous snakes, large constrictors or crocodilians separately from ordinary pets. If yours was covered in Texas, the permit office may want to hear that it has died, and any crematory will want the species named before it arrives. A dated cremation certificate satisfies most requests of this kind.

Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Schertz.

Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Schertz's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

What to do when your reptile dies in Schertz

  1. Take a breath. Once your reptile is cool and sealed in the fridge, nothing has to happen today.
  2. Confirm with a vet whenever deep torpor, cold shock or brumation could explain what you're seeing.
  3. Wash everything the body touched in hot water and soap, follow with disinfectant, and finish by scrubbing your own hands.
  4. Compare two quotes for private cremation if you have time; minimum fees for small pets vary a lot.
  5. Ask three questions: how often they cremate reptiles, how they keep a small body separate, and how much ash to expect.
  6. Plan where the ashes will go, whether that's a locket small enough for a gecko or a proper urn for a tortoise. Use the ashes weight estimator to get the size right.

Honoring a long, quiet bond

Schertz stretches along I-35 northeast of San Antonio, about 16 miles from downtown, and borders Joint Base San Antonio–Randolph. A good share of households are military families who may get orders with little warning. If a move is coming, cremation keeps your options open, because ashes can travel with you to the next duty station, while a backyard grave stays behind with the house.

Questions people ask

How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Schertz page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Schertz?

Usually yes. Universal City is about 1 miles away, Cibolo is about 2 miles away and Converse is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to San Antonio to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in San Antonio (roughly 16 miles from Schertz) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is it safe to handle my reptile's body?

Yes, with basic hygiene. Reptiles often carry Salmonella, so wear disposable gloves, double-bag the body, keep it away from food and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Keep young children and anyone with a weakened immune system away. For venomous species, use tongs near the head, because a bite reflex can remain.

Can I freeze my reptile before cremation?

Yes, once death is definitely confirmed. Double-bag the body, place it in a labelled, lidded tub and keep it away from food. Freeze only if the wait will be more than a couple of days and you don't want a post-mortem, because freezing damages tissue. For shorter waits, the fridge is enough.

Can my children help bury our pet turtle?

They can take part without handling the body. Turtles and other reptiles often carry Salmonella, and health officials at the CDC recommend that under-fives not touch reptiles or anything in their enclosures. Let an adult place the turtle, sealed, in the ground, and let children choose the spot, add a stone or plant a flower. Everyone should wash their hands well afterwards.
