Hurricane, Utah
How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Hurricane
Summer here is true desert heat, with July highs around 100 degrees and nights that barely cool off. A body deteriorates quickly in those conditions, so act within hours: move your pet into air conditioning, rest it on a towel over tile or concrete, and call your vet or provider right away. Winter is gentler, with only a handful of freezing nights, though prompt arrangements still matter.
Hurricane sits in Washington County in Utah's far southwest, about 20 miles east of St. George and a short drive from the entrance to Zion National Park. It has grown fast, with new subdivisions and many retirees alongside long-time families. Most clinics and aftercare services are based in the St. George area, so ask your vet which provider they use and whether it collects from homes in Hurricane.
A small town like Hurricane can make the grief feel lonelier, because fewer people around you keep reptiles or understand the bond. Online keepers' groups fill that gap for many people. They're also a practical resource: someone there has almost certainly arranged cremation for a snake or tortoise from a rural area and can tell you how it went.
With roughly 25,745 residents, Hurricane is the 40th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover.
Hurricane sits within easy reach of Washington (7 miles), St. George (13 miles, a larger centre) and Cedar City (40 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Hurricane; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
46.1%[1]
The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Burial is still the tradition for many families in Utah, where about 46.1%[1] of people are cremated. That can make cremating a gecko or corn snake feel unusual, but it's a routine request at pet crematories. Your vet will be used to both, so ask openly about either and choose what suits your home and your plans.
That Utah rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Hurricane only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What Hurricane's climate means for aftercare
Heat waves bring a risk that's easy to forget: power cuts. When the air conditioning stops during a June, July, August and September outage, a reptile room can climb far past safe temperatures within hours, especially glass tanks near a sunny window. If you lose a reptile this way, tell your vet it was heat, so they can advise on any others in the same room.
In Hurricane's hottest weeks, don't leave your reptile's body in a car, garage or outdoor shed, even briefly, and don't carry it to the vet in a thin bag. Use a lidded tub with a wrapped ice pack beside it, not on top. If the vet is some distance away, make the trip early in the morning or in the evening during July.

What reptile cremation costs in Hurricane
Rush service is where Hurricane bills jump. A 24-hour turnaround typically adds $50 to $150[5], and by our estimate weekend rush at one provider costs six times its weekday fee[6]. For a reptile safely refrigerated, the standard slot, about a week in many places, costs nothing extra.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules in Utah
Rules on pet burial and ashes are set locally, and Utah is no exception. For reptiles, one extra point matters: never bury one in a pot you'll bring indoors or near a vegetable bed, because Salmonella can linger in soil. Beyond that, the general rules for pets in your area apply.

Start with the Utah rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Hurricane's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do when your reptile dies in Hurricane
- If a sitter or neighbor found your reptile, ask them to photograph the enclosure and thermostat before moving anything.
- Have them wear gloves, seal the body in a bag inside a lidded tub, label it and refrigerate it on a shelf well clear of food.
- Phone your usual vet and ask whether the clinic can receive the body from your sitter. Many will hold it until you're back.
- Don't cut the trip short for the cremation. Once your reptile is cold and sealed, or at the vet, a few days' wait does no harm.
- Travelling with your reptile when it died? Any local vet can confirm death, and can then either keep the body cold until you drive home or point you to a crematory nearby.
- Check your other animals first when you get home, above all when a heating problem could have been the cause.
Remembering your reptile in Hurricane
Red rock, the Hurricane Cliffs and the blue water of Sand Hollow and Quail Creek reservoirs shape much of the outdoor life here. State parks and federal lands set their own policies on scattering, so check before leaving ashes anywhere. Plenty of families in town keep most of the remains at home and carry a spoonful to a favorite overlook once they have the land manager's blessing.

Questions people ask
Does the Hurricane climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 100°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Hurricane?
The closest communities we cover are Washington (about 7 miles), St. George (about 13 miles) and Cedar City (about 40 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Hurricane too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[1]. We show it on the Hurricane page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How long until I get my reptile's ashes back?
Many families get private cremation ashes back within one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[8] is commonly quoted in the US. From a smaller town, where the crematory may collect only on certain days, it can take longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether the ashes come by post or for collection.
What if there's no reptile vet near Hurricane?
Call your local vet anyway. Any vet can confirm death and store your reptile safely, and most can arrange cremation with the crematory they use for cats and dogs. If your reptile is still alive but unwell, ask them to consult an exotics vet by phone, or plan a drive to a larger centre such as Hurricane.
Can I have my reptile freeze-dried instead of cremated in Hurricane?
Yes, a few studios take reptiles, and some keepers like how well scales and markings survive. One Ohio studio lists a bearded dragon at about $850[9], and freeze-drying typically takes 6 to 12 months[10]. By our estimate it costs about six times an average cremation[11]. Keep the body frozen, not refrigerated, if you're considering it, and call the studio before anything else is arranged.
