Reptile cremation in Murray, from geckos to tortoises

Murray, Utah

Where Murray keepers turn for help

Murray sits in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, about seven miles south of downtown, with its own old Main Street, a major hospital campus and some of the valley's older neighborhoods of brick bungalows and postwar homes. Many residents are close to several vet clinics, which makes timing easier. Ask your clinic which cremation provider it uses and whether they offer home pickup.

Murray Park, with Little Cottonwood Creek running through it, is a gathering place for many families, and plenty of pets here have enjoyed its lawns and shade over the years. When choosing how to remember a pet, some residents think of places like this; others focus on home. Either way, asking for your pet's ashes back gives you time to decide.

In a town like Murray, word of mouth goes a long way. Ask your vet what they'd choose for a reptile of their own, or which crematory has handled tortoises before. Small practices often know the crematory staff by name and can tell you honestly how carefully they deal with very small bodies, which is the real question for a gecko or an anole.

About 53,297 people live in Murray, which makes it the 18th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Murray are based about 7 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

The closest communities we cover are Midvale (3 miles), Taylorsville (3 miles) and Holladay (3 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Murray too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

How Utah thinks about cremation

Burial is still the tradition for many families in Utah, where about 46.1%[1] of people are cremated. That can make cremating a gecko or corn snake feel unusual, but it's a routine request at pet crematories. Your vet will be used to both, so ask openly about either and choose what suits your home and your plans.

The Utah percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Murray, not as a count of pets.

What Murray's climate means for aftercare

Keepers in Murray often run two setups a year: extra cooling in July and August and extra heat in January, February and December. Each change-over is a moment when a thermostat gets set wrongly or a bulb isn't replaced. If a reptile dies soon after you switched, check both before blaming illness, which may protect your other animals.

Murray gets both extremes: highs around 94°F in July and freezing lows in January, February and December. For reptile keepers that means two risky seasons. Summer heat waves and winter cold snaps both strain vivarium heating and cooling, and a power cut in either can be fatal. A battery thermometer with a max-min reading shows you what happened overnight.

Paying for a reptile's cremation in Murray

Expect Murray prices to follow size, but only at the top end. Geckos, dragons, corn snakes and box turtles all sit in the lowest band; a big sulcata tortoise or Burmese python is priced like a large dog, and CareCredit's over-90 lb band reaches $350 to $450 for private cremation[5]. Collection, a keepsake urn and a certificate are often extra.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Permits, paperwork and burial in Utah

Keepers of aquatic turtles sometimes feel drawn to return a turtle to a pond or river after it dies. Please don't: a body left in water can spread disease to wild turtles, and releasing turtles is restricted in many places. The notes below explain the burial and scattering options Utah permits, which are the safer routes.

Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Murray.

For Utah's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Utah guide. Local rules in Murray can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

What to do when your reptile dies in Murray

  1. Take a breath. Once your reptile is cool and sealed in the fridge, nothing has to happen today.
  2. Confirm with a vet whenever deep torpor, cold shock or brumation could explain what you're seeing.
  3. Wash everything the body touched in hot water and soap, follow with disinfectant, and finish by scrubbing your own hands.
  4. Compare two quotes for private cremation if you have time; minimum fees for small pets vary a lot.
  5. Ask three questions: how often they cremate reptiles, how they keep a small body separate, and how much ash to expect.
  6. Plan where the ashes will go, from a tiny locket for a gecko to an urn for a tortoise. The ashes weight estimator helps you size it.

Ways to remember a reptile locally

Murray's position on the valley floor means cold, hazy inversions in winter and mid-90s heat in July. In either season a pet's body needs a cool resting place quickly, such as a basement floor, a tiled bathroom or an unheated garage. Wrap it in a towel, keep curious children and other animals away if that helps, and contact your vet or an aftercare service before the day is out.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Murray?

Usually yes. Midvale is about 3 miles away, Taylorsville is about 3 miles away and Holladay is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 7 miles from Murray) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Does the Murray climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Is cremation common in Utah?

For people, yes: about 46.1%[1] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Murray follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?

Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.

Is communal cremation a respectful choice for a reptile?

Yes. In communal cremation your reptile is cremated with other animals and no ashes come back, but reputable providers handle it with the same care and scatter or bury the ashes together in a dedicated place. It suits keepers who don't want an urn at home. Ask where the shared ashes go; some providers can tell you the location so you can visit.
