Pullman, Washington
Getting reptile aftercare sorted in Pullman
The Bill Chipman Palouse Trail to Moscow and the paths around town are favorite routes, and the view from Kamiak Butte takes in the whole Palouse. Student leases seldom permit digging in the yard, so a small urn that can go home at the end of the school year is the usual answer. Knowing that early helps if graduation or a move is coming.
Pullman is a college town in Whitman County, set among the rolling wheat hills of the Palouse about 65 miles south of Spokane, with Moscow, Idaho, just across the state line. Much of its population is students, faculty and staff at Washington State University, many living in apartments and rentals on the hills around campus. The university has a veterinary college, but your own clinic is still the first place to ask: ask which aftercare route it uses.
Rural gardens around Pullman see more wildlife, and a buried reptile can draw foxes, raccoons or badgers. Choose a spot you can cover with a paving slab or a heavy stone, away from where pets and livestock roam. If the ground is rocky or often waterlogged, cremating first and burying the ashes is simpler.
About 33,756 people live in Pullman, which makes it the 39th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Pullman are based about 65 miles away in Spokane, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Pullman sits within easy reach of Moscow (8 miles), Lewiston (25 miles) and Spokane Valley (64 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Pullman; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
79.1%[1]
Washington had a 79.1% cremation rate in 2024, among the highest in the US.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
A human cremation rate as high as 79.1%[1], the figure for Washington, supports a crowded pet aftercare market with long menus of extras: paw prints, velvet bags, photo frames. Most were designed with dogs and cats in mind. For a snake or lizard, choose only what fits, and ask to see the basic private price on its own line.
We take the Washington rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Pullman, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and power cuts in Pullman
Pullman has average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, April, November and December, and that's when many reptiles naturally slow down for brumation. A brumating snake or tortoise can look lifeless for weeks. Before you assume the worst in winter, keep it at its normal temperature and ask a reptile vet to check for a heartbeat. Never freeze an animal you aren't certain has died.
Cold keeps a body well, but collections can pause in the worst of December, when lows around Pullman average about 22°F. Ask whether the vet can keep the body in the practice freezer until the roads clear, rather than trying to keep a large tortoise cold on a porch or in a shed where animals can reach it.

How much to budget in Pullman, by size
In a US survey, 61% of owners said the cost of aftercare worried them[5]. For reptiles the numbers are usually modest, because most sit in the lowest band shown below. The simplest way to keep a Pullman quote honest is to give the species, the weight and, for snakes, the length, then ask for one written total.
The Washington price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial, scattering and protected species in Washington
Few authorities inspect how a pet crematory keeps a small body apart from others, and Washington is unlikely to be an exception. That puts the job of asking on you. The rules summarized below cover what you may do with a body or ashes; a promise that your reptile is cremated alone belongs in a written agreement.

The Washington page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Pullman's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Who to call and what to do, in order
- Confirm the death first. Illness, cold and brumation can all make a reptile seem dead when it isn't. Leave the enclosure at its normal warmth and have a vet who treats reptiles or exotics listen for a heartbeat.
- Put on disposable gloves every time you touch the body, then scrub your hands for 20 seconds or more once you're done. Salmonella is common in reptiles.
- Double-bag the body and place it in a lidded, labelled tub in the fridge, away from food. Freeze it only if the wait will be long and you don't want a post-mortem.
- Decide about keepsakes now: a shed skin from the enclosure, a photo of the markings or, for a tortoise, whether to keep the shell.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly, giving species, weight and, for a snake, length. We can also send you local options.
- Ask for a written total which spells out the type of cremation: private, partitioned or communal.
- Leave the enclosure for now if you keep other reptiles, and clean it thoroughly before anything else lives in it.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Pullman gets real winter: freezing weather from November into April and December lows in the low 20s, while August reaches the mid-80s. Cold can buy a few hours, yet an animal left in a car or on a porch may freeze, which complicates things. Bring it inside to a cool room on a towel, and in warm months arrange a handover the same day. Icy roads may slow pickup.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Pullman actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Spokane, about 65 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Pullman and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pullman?
Usually yes. Moscow is about 8 miles away, Lewiston is about 25 miles away and Spokane Valley is about 64 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Pullman's weather affect reptile aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Pullman, with average highs around 86°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, April, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Is cremation common in Washington?
For people, yes: about 79.1%[1] of Washington deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Pullman follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What happens if my reptile dies while I'm on vacation?
Your sitter should put on gloves, wrap the body in a sealed bag, put that in a lidded container in the fridge and take photos of the enclosure and thermostat. Then phone your vet, who may agree to hold the body until you're back. You don't need to rush home: a sealed, chilled body keeps for days. Check your other animals as soon as you return, especially if heating was involved.
How can I tell if my reptile is brumating or has died?
It can be genuinely hard. A brumating reptile may breathe only a few times an hour and barely respond to touch. Keep it at its normal winter temperature, watch for a tongue flick or slight eye movement, and ask a reptile vet to check for a heartbeat with a Doppler probe. Don't freeze or bury until death is confirmed.
