Reptile Cremation in Ireland: what to know
Reptiles in Ireland range from geckos under 100 grams to tortoises that outweigh a Labrador, and aftercare has to fit both. Below you'll find what cremation typically costs, the rules worth knowing and every community we cover in Ireland, currently 3, each with local weather and timing notes.
Reptile cremation in Ireland follows the same basic choices as for any pet: private cremation with ashes returned, or communal cremation without. What differs is how often providers see snakes, lizards and tortoises, what they charge and which rules apply to burial, scattering and protected species. This page covers Ireland as a whole; each city page adds local detail.
We cover 3 communities in Ireland, from Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Cremation habits in Ireland and your reptile
Only about 26.56%[1] of people in Ireland are cremated, so burial remains the local habit, and many reptile keepers here bury small lizards, snakes and turtles at home. Cremation is still widely available, and it's worth considering if you rent, might move, or keep a tortoise you'd like to take with you wherever you live.
The cremation figure for Ireland comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Ireland
In Germany, a consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[2]; in the Netherlands, a comparison of 31 crematoria put averages at about €200 and €300[3]. Those figures are mostly for cats and dogs, so a small reptile in Ireland should sit at or below the bottom of the range.
In France, a guide from insurer SantéVet puts collective cremation of a 20 kg dog at €70 to €120 and individual at €150 to €250[4]. A reptile weighing a few hundred grams should sit well below those figures. In Ireland, ask for the price by weight and whether a minimum charge applies regardless of size.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150 |
| Germany (all sizes) | €85 to €205 | €165 to €375 |
| Netherlands (average, mostly dogs) | about €200 | about €300 |

Local rules in Ireland
Most decisions after a reptile dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything involving a regulated species. Some reptiles are covered by wildlife-trade or invasive-species rules, which can affect selling or giving away a shell and mean a sick or dead reptile should never be released or dumped outdoors. Everything else follows the general pet rules for Ireland.
In Ireland, reptile-experienced vets are concentrated in the larger towns, so rural keepers often confirm death with their local vet and have the crematorium collect from the clinic. Individual cremation for pets under 2 kg starts from about €150 at one crematorium[6], and most pet reptiles fall in that band. Ask whether collection is included.
What to do when your reptile dies in Ireland
- Ask how long the clinic can hold your reptile and confirm it will be kept cold. A small body can usually stay there for a few days.
- Say whether you want a post-mortem before anything is arranged, because freezing and cremation both rule it out later.
- Find out which crematory the clinic uses and ask if reptiles there are cremated alone or together with other animals.
- Take your reptile home instead if you prefer to bury it in the garden or use another provider, and request a sealed container with a label.
- Check the release paperwork: your reptile's name, species and the service you chose should all be written on it.
- Ask for a call when the ashes reach the clinic, and find out if a quieter time can be arranged for collecting them.
Keeping your reptile close
Some Ireland keepers turn part of the old enclosure into a memorial, keeping a favorite hide, a branch or the name plate. Others donate the vivarium, lamps and thermostats to a reptile rescue once they're ready, which quietly helps another animal. There's no right time; wait until the empty tank stops hurting quite so much.

Questions people ask
How much does reptile cremation cost in Ireland?
Most pet reptiles fall into the smallest weight band crematories use, so you're mostly paying the provider's minimum fee plus collection and a container. Very large tortoises, monitors and pythons are priced like big dogs. Prices vary between cities and rural areas across Ireland, so ask for an itemized written total that names your reptile's species and weight.
Is cremation common in Ireland?
For people, about 26.56%[1] of deaths in Ireland end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among reptile keepers, cremation is common for long-lived animals like tortoises and for anyone without a garden, while small lizards and turtles are still often buried at home.
Where can I scatter my reptile's ashes in Ireland?
Private land with the owner's permission is simplest. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. A small reptile leaves very little ash, so many keepers bury it in a planter at home or keep it in a pendant instead of scattering.
How many communities do you cover in Ireland?
We currently have local reptile aftercare guides for 3 communities in Ireland, including Dublin, Cork and Galway. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how collection usually works there, with advice for keepers of snakes, lizards and tortoises.
Can I bury my reptile at home in Ireland?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Local councils, cities and landlords can be stricter than regional rules. Because reptiles often carry Salmonella, bury well away from vegetable beds and wash your hands afterwards. If you rent, cremation keeps your reptile with you.
Can I keep my tortoise's shell in Ireland?
Usually yes, but you must decide before cremation, because a shell can't be recovered afterwards. A preservation specialist can clean it, or it can be cremated with the body. If your tortoise is a protected species, keep its paperwork and check the rules before selling or giving the shell to anyone else.
