Snake, lizard and tortoise cremation in Galway

Galway, Connacht

Reptile aftercare in Galway: the local picture

Galway is a compact, busy city with plenty of rented flats and terraced houses near the centre, a big student population and estates spreading out toward Knocknacarra, Oranmore and Barna. Traffic around the bridges and the Headford Road can crawl at rush hour. If you want your pet collected, give the full address, including an Eircode, and mention stairs or parking; many people simply drive in at a quieter time.

Salthill is Galway's great outdoor room: owners stroll the prom in all weathers, pets in tow, with the Burren hills across the bay and the Aran Islands on the horizon on a clear evening. Others prefer the Corrib riverbank toward Menlo or the woods at Barna. When a family pictures its animal, it is often there. For scattering by the sea, choose a calm, low-tide morning, well clear of bathing spots and slipways.

Power cuts tend to last longer outside big cities, and they're a real danger for reptiles. If your reptile was found cold and motionless after an outage near Galway, don't assume the worst straight away. Bring the room back up to its normal temperature slowly, avoid hot water or direct heat, and phone a vet. Think about freezing or cremation only once death is confirmed.

Galway is home to about 80,000 people.

If you want to compare providers, look at Cork (98 miles, a larger centre) and Dublin (116 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

26.56%[1]

In 2024, 26.56% of deaths in the Republic of Ireland were cremated (9,341 of 35,173; excludes one crematorium).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep reptiles.

700,000[3]

There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local cremation culture means for keepers

In Ireland, only about 26.56%[1] of people are cremated, and backyard burial of pets is common. If you're burying a reptile, remember that many species carry Salmonella: wear gloves, bury well away from water and vegetable beds, and wash your hands thoroughly. If burial doesn't feel right, cremation is available through most vets.

We take the Ireland rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Galway, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Seasons, brumation and timing in Galway

Seasons change reptile behavior as much as they change timing. Many species eat less and barely move in the cooler months, and tortoises may hibernate. If your reptile stopped moving during a seasonal slowdown in Galway, a vet check is the kind thing to do before you make any plans at all.

How much to budget in Galway, by size

Waiting times differ across Europe as much as prices. AniCura in Sweden says ashes normally take 2 to 4 weeks to come back[5], longer than many US providers quote. If you're in Galway and hoping to have the ashes home by a particular date, raise it when you book rather than afterwards.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Connacht: Connacht costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and protected species in Connacht

Some places license venomous snakes, large constrictors or crocodilians separately from ordinary pets. If yours was covered in Connacht, the permit office may want to hear that it has died, and any crematory will want the species named before it arrives. A dated cremation certificate satisfies most requests of this kind.

In Ireland, reptile-experienced vets are concentrated in the larger towns, so rural keepers often confirm death with their local vet and have the crematorium collect from the clinic. Individual cremation for pets under 2 kg starts from about €150 at one crematorium[7], and most pet reptiles fall in that band. Ask whether collection is included.

Who to call and what to do, in order

  1. Confirm the death first. Illness, cold and brumation can all make a reptile seem dead when it isn't. Leave the enclosure at its normal warmth and have a vet who treats reptiles or exotics listen for a heartbeat.
  2. Put on disposable gloves before handling, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Reptiles often carry Salmonella.
  3. Double-bag the body and place it in a lidded, labelled tub in the fridge, away from food. Freeze it only if the wait will be long and you don't want a post-mortem.
  4. Decide about keepsakes now: a shed left in the tank, a photo of the pattern or, with a tortoise, whether the shell stays with you.
  5. Contact a provider yourself or via your clinic, and tell them the species, how heavy it is and, if it's a snake, how long. Or ask us to send you local options.
  6. Ask for a written total which spells out the type of cremation: private, partitioned or communal.
  7. Leave the enclosure for now when other reptiles share your home, and give it a full clean before any new animal moves in.

Memorials that suit a reptile

Atlantic weather dominates Galway: mild, very wet and often windy, with few hard frosts and summers that rarely get hot. That makes the first day easier. Put your pet on an old towel in a cool back room or shed, away from the radiators, and a day's wait before collection is no problem. In a rare warm spell, add a couple of frozen packs wrapped in a cloth.

Questions people ask

Why does the Galway page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) reports about 26.56%[1] of Ireland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Galway?

Usually yes. Cork is about 98 miles away and Dublin is about 116 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a reptile?

In private cremation your reptile is cremated alone and only its ashes come back. In communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes are returned. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share a chamber but are kept apart; ask exactly how separation works, because it matters most for very small bodies.

Can I take my reptile's ashes with me to another country?

Usually yes. Pet ashes are generally allowed through customs and on flights, but check the airline's rules and carry the cremation certificate. A tortoise shell is different: if the species is protected under wildlife-trade rules, moving the shell across a border can need a permit, so keep any paperwork that came with your tortoise and ask before you travel.

How much ash will I get back from my reptile?

Cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so the amount follows size closely. A leopard gecko returns a gram or two, a bearded dragon about a tablespoon, a ball python a few ounces and a large tortoise several pounds. Shelled species return a little more because the shell is bone. The ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your pet.

Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?

Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
