That can make cremating a gecko or corn snake feel unusual, but it's a routine request at pet crematories. Your vet will be used to both, so ask openly about either and choose what suits your home and your plans.

You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Liguria and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.
The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- Book the final appointment with a vet who treats reptiles regularly, and check whether sedation comes first. The usual approach is one injection to bring sleep, then a second to end life.
- Settle the aftercare before the day, because the consulting room is no place to weigh up options. Let the clinic know in advance if you'd like a private cremation with the ashes coming back.
- Pack a familiar hide or towel in the carrier. In cold weather, keep it warm on the journey with a wrapped heat pack.
- Ask the vet to confirm death with a Doppler before you leave, because a reptile's heart can go on beating slowly for a while after the injection.
- Decide whether to stay in the room. Many keepers do; others say goodbye beforehand. Both are loving choices.
- Read the cremation form before signing, making sure private or communal is ticked correctly and noting any wish about a shell, a shed or another keepsake.
- Pay ahead if the clinic allows it, and the goodbye won't end at the reception desk.

Yes, and many keepers do. A clean, complete shed shows every scale and marking. Handle it with gloves, let it dry fully and store it flat in a sealed frame or display box away from damp. Turtles that shed their scutes leave small translucent plates that fit neatly in a locket.
