Cremation customs in Italy, applied to reptiles
Cremation accounts for just 38.16%[1] of funerals for people in Italy, and crematories are thinner on the ground as a result. Some pet cremation here runs through vet-owned units or a crematory in the next county. Ask whether yours cremates on site or sends animals elsewhere, since every extra handover is another chance for a small reptile to be mislabeled.

What Siena's climate means for aftercare

Before you bury or scatter in Tuscany
Some places license venomous snakes, large constrictors or crocodilians separately from ordinary pets. If yours was covered in Tuscany, the permit office may want to hear that it has died, and any crematory will want the species named before it arrives. A dated cremation certificate satisfies most requests of this kind.
The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- If a sitter or neighbor found your reptile, have them take pictures of the tank and the thermostat setting before anything is touched.
- Have them wear gloves, seal the body in a bag inside a lidded tub, label it and refrigerate it on a shelf well clear of food.
- Phone your usual vet to see if your sitter can bring the body to the clinic. Often they'll keep it there until you return.
- Don't cut the trip short for the cremation. Once your reptile is cold and sealed, or at the vet, a few days' wait does no harm.
- Travelling with your reptile when it died? Any local vet can confirm death, and can then either keep the body cold until you drive home or point you to a crematory nearby.
- Check your other animals first when you get home, above all when a heating problem could have been the cause.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Siena's historic centre sits on three ridges, a maze of steep lanes, stone apartment buildings and limited traffic zones where most cars can't drive freely. If you live inside the walls, tell a provider exactly where you are and whether a vehicle can get close, since carrying a pet down stairs and alleys may be part of collection. In the newer districts outside the walls, access is usually simpler.

Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?
Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
What if there's no reptile vet near Siena?
Call your local vet anyway. Any vet can confirm death and store your reptile safely, and most can arrange cremation with the crematory they use for cats and dogs. If your reptile is still alive but unwell, ask them to consult an exotics vet by phone, or plan a drive to a larger centre such as Florence.
