Reptile aftercare in Florence: the local picture
Florence sits in a bowl surrounded by hills, and summers are very hot, often well above 35°C, while winters are cool and damp. In summer, cool your pet quickly: shutters closed, a tiled floor, a towel and cold packs. Summer tourist traffic also slows movement around the city, so contact your vet or a provider as soon as you can.
A garden grave is rarely realistic in Florence, where most families have a balcony rather than a garden, and Tuscan and municipal rules decide where it is allowed at all. Most Florentines therefore choose cremation, either individually, so the ashes come home, or communally. A pet cemetery on the edge of the city is another option for families who want a place to visit. Your vet will know what operates nearby.
Florence is large enough for real choice in pet cremation but small enough that reptiles are a minority of what any one provider sees. That's no reason to worry, just a reason to ask. A good provider will tell you how they keep a small body separate, what container a long snake travels in and roughly how much ash you should expect back.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Where burial is the habit, as in Italy with only about 38.16%[1] of people cremated, burying a pet reptile can feel natural too. Think about who uses the garden. A grave near a play area, a pond or a vegetable plot is a poor fit for an animal that may carry Salmonella, and cremation removes that concern entirely.

Heat, cold and power cuts in Florence
Wherever you are, the first rule with a reptile is to confirm death before anything else, because a cold or brumating reptile can seem lifeless. After that, keep the body in a sealed tub in the fridge. In warm weather, ask for collection within a day or two; in cold weather, you'll usually have a little more time.
Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Florence
In Florence, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first contact and arranges collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium directly, which is worth doing for a reptile, because you can ask how they handle very small bodies or a tortoise shell. Ask for individual and collective prices by weight.

What Tuscany allows for burial and ashes
You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Tuscany and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.
A plan for the next few days
- Book the final appointment with a vet who treats reptiles regularly, and check whether sedation comes first. The usual approach is one injection to bring sleep, then a second to end life.
- Settle the aftercare before the day, so you aren't choosing between services in the consulting room. Tell the clinic whether you want private cremation and the ashes returned.
- Pack a familiar hide or towel in the carrier. In cold weather, keep it warm on the journey with a wrapped heat pack.
- Ask the vet to confirm death with a Doppler before heading home. After the injection, a reptile's heart may keep up a slow beat for some time.
- Decide whether to stay in the room. Some keepers stay to the end, some say goodbye first, and neither is less loving.
- Read the cremation form before signing, checking private or communal and writing down any request about a shell, shed or keepsake.
- Pay ahead if the clinic allows it, so the last few minutes aren't about a card machine.
Remembering your reptile in Florence
Most Florentines live in apartments, many in centuries-old buildings in the historic centre with steep stone stairs and no lift, while others live in the suburbs or in the hills toward Fiesole. Cars need a permit to enter the historic centre's ZTL, so a van may not reach your door. Tell the provider which piazza or corner a van can reach. Most Florentine vets can also arrange cremation for you.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Bologna to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Bologna (roughly 50 miles from Florence) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?
Usually yes. Siena is about 31 miles away, Bologna is about 50 miles away and Portofino is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Florence page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can I freeze my reptile before cremation?
Yes, once death is definitely confirmed. Double-bag the body, place it in a labelled, lidded tub and keep it away from food. Freeze only if the wait will be more than a couple of days and you don't want a post-mortem, because freezing damages tissue. For shorter waits, the fridge is enough.
Can I keep my tortoise's shell instead of cremating it?
Yes, but only if you decide before cremation. A shell can be cremated along with the body, or cleaned and preserved by a specialist and kept whole. Tell the provider in writing which you want. If your tortoise is a protected species, check the rules before ever selling or giving the shell away.
Can I take my reptile's ashes with me to another country?
Usually yes. Pet ashes are generally allowed through customs and on flights, but check the airline's rules and carry the cremation certificate. A tortoise shell is different: if the species is protected under wildlife-trade rules, moving the shell across a border can need a permit, so keep any paperwork that came with your tortoise and ask before you travel.
