Daegu, South Korea
How snake, lizard and tortoise cremation works in Daegu
Many Daegu families associate their pet with one special spot: a sunny apartment window, a rooftop garden, or the green paths along the Sincheon stream and the Geumho River. A private cremation where you can attend and take the ashes home the same day is common here. If you'd rather not be present, that's fine too. Ask how the cremation is carried out and what the ashes will come back in.
Daegu is known as one of the hottest cities in Korea, because the surrounding mountains trap summer heat in the basin, and its winters are cold and dry. In July and August, a pet's body needs cooling almost at once: lay your pet on a towel, place ice packs around the belly and back, and keep the air conditioning running. In winter, a room away from floor heating works for a short while.
Many Daegu keepers live in apartments, where the practical side needs a little planning. A large snake or tortoise weighs more than you expect once it's in a container, and building rules on reptiles vary. Use a sturdy lidded tub rather than a bag, take the service lift if there is one, and let the front desk know a collection is coming so nobody is surprised.
Daegu's population is around 2,461,000.
If you want to compare providers, look at Busan (55 miles), Daejeon (76 miles) and Gwangju (110 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How South Korea thinks about cremation
Cremation is the everyday choice in South Korea: about 92.43%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity helps reptile keepers, because local crematories are well established and nobody needs to explain wanting ashes home. The gap is experience with unusual species, so the practical step is simply to ask how often a provider sees snakes, lizards and tortoises.
We take the South Korea rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Daegu, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What Daegu's climate means for aftercare
We don't hold weather records for Daegu, so your own enclosure readings are the most reliable guide to what happened. Note the temperatures at the warm and cool ends, check the thermostat setting and look at the bulb. Pass those details to the vet; they matter far more than a forecast when a reptile dies unexpectedly.

Reptile cremation prices in Daegu
Pet cremation in Asia is often priced as a funeral package. In Hong Kong, one provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[5]; in Japan, a funeral hall charges about JPY 60,000 for the same size with a ceremony[6]. Most reptiles fall into that smallest band, so ask a Daegu provider what's included.

Rules reptile keepers should know in South Korea
Before a home burial anywhere in South Korea, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.
The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- If you're unsure, wait and call. Freezing, burial and a cremation booking can all wait for a vet's confirmation, ideally using a Doppler probe.
- If you keep a collection, ask the vet whether a necropsy (post-mortem) is worth doing before cremation. Refrigerate, don't freeze, if you want one.
- Keep children and anyone with a weak immune system away from the body and the cleanup.
- Choose between private and communal cremation. For a small lizard, ask how much ash to expect so you can pick a keepsake that fits.
- Arrange collection or drop-off. Most small reptiles can go to the vet in a sealed tub; for a heavy tortoise or long snake, ask the provider to collect.
- Get the return date and price in writing, including the urn or container.
Memorials that suit a reptile
Daegu sits in a basin ringed by mountains, with Palgongsan to the north and Apsan to the south, and most households live in apartment complexes spreading out from the old center. As elsewhere in Korea, burying a pet on a hillside, in a park or on apartment grounds isn't permitted, so licensed cremation is the normal route. Many facilities sit outside the city, so tell us your district and whether you'd like collection.

Questions people ask
How do South Korea attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the South Korea human cremation rate at about 92.43%[1]. We show it on the Daegu page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Daegu?
The closest communities we cover are Busan (about 55 miles), Daejeon (about 76 miles) and Gwangju (about 110 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Daegu too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How much ash will I get back from my reptile?
Cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so the amount follows size closely. A leopard gecko returns a gram or two, a bearded dragon about a tablespoon, a ball python a few ounces and a large tortoise several pounds. Shelled species return a little more because the shell is bone. The ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your pet.
My reptile died after a power cut. What should I do?
First make sure it really has died: a chilled or overheated reptile can be torpid rather than dead, so bring the room back to normal temperature gradually and ask a vet to check. Then tell the vet what temperatures the enclosure reached, especially if you keep other reptiles, because they may need checking too.
Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?
Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
Are there exotics vets open at night in Daegu?
Larger cities often have at least one emergency hospital that sees exotics, but not every overnight clinic does. Phone before you drive and ask specifically about reptiles. If your reptile has clearly died, there's usually no need for an emergency visit: seal it in a tub in the fridge and call an exotics vet in the morning.
