Málaga sits between the Mediterranean and the Montes de Málaga, with the Gibralfaro hill and the Malagueta beach close to the old town. About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Reptile aftercare follows a similar pattern: garden burial is still common for small lizards and turtles, but more keepers now choose cremation, especially for long-lived animals like tortoises that they want to keep close for years to come.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Malaga tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, cold and power cuts in Malaga
Whatever the season in Malaga, a small reptile's body keeps best in an ordinary household fridge, not on a windowsill or in an outdoor bin. If the fridge feels wrong to you, a cool box with frozen water bottles works for a day. Either way, label the container clearly so nobody opens it by mistake.

Before you bury or scatter in Andalusia
Most decisions after a reptile dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything involving a regulated species. Some reptiles are covered by wildlife-trade or invasive-species rules, which can affect selling or giving away a shell and mean a sick or dead reptile should never be released or dumped outdoors. Everything else follows the general pet rules for Andalusia.
A calm checklist for keepers in Malaga
- Don't lift alone. Moving a large sulcata or a long python is a two-person job with a board or a sturdy tote, and your back will thank you.
- Weigh it if you safely can, or estimate, and measure a snake from nose to tail tip. The provider needs both figures to quote and to plan the chamber.
- Lay the body on a cool, hard floor in the shadiest room, away from other pets, with wrapped ice packs along its sides.
- Ask for collection with lifting help, and explain the access: any gates or steps, and where the van can park relative to your door.
- Raise the shell question before anyone arrives. Keeping it means the tortoise goes to a preservation specialist before it goes anywhere else.

Málaga's pets live in city-center flats with shared patios, in apartment blocks along the coast toward Torremolinos, and in villas with gardens in the hills. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Malaga?
Usually yes. Marbella is about 29 miles away, Granada is about 55 miles away and Seville is about 98 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a reptile?
In private cremation your reptile is cremated alone and only its ashes come back. In communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes are returned. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share a chamber but are kept apart; ask exactly how separation works, because it matters most for very small bodies.
How much does it cost to cremate a snake or lizard in Malaga?
Published prices for small pets outside the US give a good guide. In the UK, individual cremation of a cat-sized pet is roughly £160 to £190; in Australia the median for pets under 5 kg is about AUD 412; in Ireland individual cremation starts from €150 for pets under 2 kg. Communal is much cheaper. Ask a Malaga provider for its small-pet rate and what's included.
Do I have to use the crematory my Malaga vet recommends?
No. Your vet's arrangement is convenient, but you can choose any provider that serves Malaga and ask them to collect from the clinic. For a reptile, it's worth asking whether they have handled your species before and how they keep very small bodies separate from others.
Can a vet put my reptile to sleep at home in Malaga?
Some mobile vets offer home euthanasia for reptiles, but not all, because reptiles need species-specific sedation. Ask whether the vet has experience with your species and whether they can take your reptile to a crematory afterwards. If home visits aren't available, a quiet appointment at the start or end of clinic hours is a gentle alternative.
