Reptile Cremation in Spain: what to know

Reptiles in Spain range from geckos under 100 grams to tortoises that outweigh a Labrador, and aftercare has to fit both. Below you'll find what cremation typically costs, the rules worth knowing and every community we cover in Spain, currently 17, each with local weather and timing notes.

Reptile cremation in Spain follows the same basic choices as for any pet: private cremation with ashes returned, or communal cremation without. What differs is how often providers see snakes, lizards and tortoises, what they charge and which rules apply to burial, scattering and protected species. This page covers Spain as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

We cover 17 communities in Spain, from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia to smaller towns.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial

About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Reptile aftercare follows a similar pattern: garden burial is still common for small lizards and turtles, but more keepers now choose cremation, especially for long-lived animals like tortoises that they want to keep close for years to come.

We take the Spain percentage from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

Spain prices, from gecko to giant tortoise

In Germany, a consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[2]; in the Netherlands, a comparison of 31 crematoria put averages at about €200 and €300[3]. Those figures are mostly for cats and dogs, so a small reptile in Spain should sit at or below the bottom of the range.

European prices vary by country but follow one rule: collective (communal) cremation costs much less than individual. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from €150 for pets under 2 kg[4], which covers most geckos, dragons and snakes. Ask a Spain provider for its small-pet rate and exactly what's included.

Local rules in Spain

You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Spain and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.

The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step

  1. Don't lift alone. A big sulcata or a very long python needs two people and a board or strong tote. Protect your back.
  2. Weigh it if you safely can, or make a fair guess, and for a snake take the length from snout to the end of the tail. Quotes and chamber planning depend on those two numbers.
  3. Lay the body on a cool, hard floor in the shadiest room, away from other pets, with wrapped ice packs along its sides.
  4. Ask for collection with lifting help, and explain the access: any gates or steps, and where the van can park relative to your door.
  5. Raise the shell question before anyone arrives. If you want to keep it, a preservation specialist has to receive the tortoise first.
  6. Confirm which weight band you'll be charged in, since a large reptile may be priced like a big dog. The aftercare comparison lays the options side by side.
  7. Choose an urn for a real quantity of ash, which can run to several pounds for a giant tortoise. The urn size calculator helps.

Remembering your reptile in Spain

Tiny amounts of ash suit tiny containers. One US retailer lists mini keepsake urns at about $15–$60[6], and by our estimate a one-ounce keepsake can cost a third more than a full-size wooden urn[7], because the craftsmanship is the same. For a gecko or anole, one keepsake holds everything, so there's no reason to buy both.

Questions people ask

How much does reptile cremation cost in Spain?

Most pet reptiles fall into the smallest weight band crematories use, so you're mostly paying the provider's minimum fee plus collection and a container. Very large tortoises, monitors and pythons are priced like big dogs. Prices vary between cities and rural areas across Spain, so ask for an itemized written total that names your reptile's species and weight.

Can I keep my tortoise's shell in Spain?

Usually yes, but you must decide before cremation, because a shell can't be recovered afterwards. A preservation specialist can clean it, or it can be cremated with the body. If your tortoise is a protected species, keep its paperwork and check the rules before selling or giving the shell to anyone else.

Is cremation common in Spain?

For people, about 50.11%[1] of deaths in Spain end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among reptile keepers, cremation is common for long-lived animals like tortoises and for anyone without a garden, while small lizards and turtles are still often buried at home.

How can I be sure my reptile was cremated on its own in Spain?

Ask for the promise in writing. A good provider will state which type of cremation you're paying for, how a small body is tracked from pickup to return and what kind of certificate you'll receive. Some let you be present or drop your reptile off yourself. Vague answers to these questions are a reason to look elsewhere.

How many communities do you cover in Spain?

We currently have local reptile aftercare guides for 17 communities in Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how collection usually works there, with advice for keepers of snakes, lizards and tortoises.

Do vets in Spain offer home euthanasia for reptiles?

Some do, mostly mobile vets working around larger cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Because sedation differs between a snake, a lizard and a tortoise, ask how often the vet does this for your species and who transports the body afterwards. Where no home service exists, booking the first or last slot of the clinic day keeps things quiet.
