A cremation rate of roughly 50.11%[1] in Spain leaves room for family traditions either way. Ask the people around you what they did for past pets. You may find a grandparent who buried every tortoise under the same pear tree, and a story like that can shape your choice as much as any price.

Rules reptile keepers should know in Basque Country
You don't need anyone's permission to have your snake, lizard or tortoise cremated. Home burial and scattering are different: Basque Country and your local council or county may set conditions such as depth or distance from water. If your reptile came with paperwork, such as a captive-breeding certificate for a protected tortoise, keep it with the ashes or the shell.
A plan for the next few days
- Confirm the death first. A cold, sick or brumating reptile can look lifeless. Keep it at its usual enclosure temperature and ask a reptile or exotics vet to check for a heartbeat.
- Put on disposable gloves before handling, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Reptiles often carry Salmonella.
- Double-bag the body and put it in a tub with a lid and a label on a fridge shelf where no food is kept. The freezer is for a long wait only, and only when a post-mortem is off the table.
- Decide about keepsakes now: a shed left in the tank, a photo of the pattern or, with a tortoise, whether the shell stays with you.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your clinic, and tell them the species, how heavy it is and, if it's a snake, how long. Or ask us to send you local options.
- Ask for a written total which spells out the type of cremation: private, partitioned or communal.
- Leave the enclosure for now if you keep other reptiles, and clean it thoroughly before anything else lives in it.
Ways to remember a reptile locally
Bilbao's climate is mild and wet, with rain in every season and humid summers that rarely get extremely hot. Even so, a pet's body should be kept cool within a few hours: lay your pet on a towel in the coolest room, place cold packs wrapped in cloth along the back and belly, and keep windows shaded. Taking a day to decide is reasonable, but not much longer in summer.

Many families get private cremation ashes back within one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[7] is commonly quoted in the US. From a smaller town, where the crematory may collect only on certain days, it can take longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether the ashes come by post or for collection.
My reptile died after a power cut. What should I do?
First make sure it really has died: a chilled or overheated reptile can be torpid rather than dead, so bring the room back to normal temperature gradually and ask a vet to check. Then tell the vet what temperatures the enclosure reached, especially if you keep other reptiles, because they may need checking too.
Can I freeze my reptile before cremation?
Yes, once death is definitely confirmed. Double-bag the body, place it in a labelled, lidded tub and keep it away from food. Freeze only if the wait will be more than a couple of days and you don't want a post-mortem, because freezing damages tissue. For shorter waits, the fridge is enough.
How much ash will I get back from my reptile?
Cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so the amount follows size closely. A leopard gecko returns a gram or two, a bearded dragon about a tablespoon, a ball python a few ounces and a large tortoise several pounds. Shelled species return a little more because the shell is bone. The ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your pet.
